OUR PARISH MISSION
STATEMENT
WE ARE THE CATHOLIC PARISH COMMUNITY OF ST. PHILIP
NERI, ANSWERING CHRIST’S CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP THROUGH WORD, SACRAMENT AND
SERVICE.
WE PROCLAIM GOD’S HOPE AND LOVE TO ALL.
LET US PRAISE
CHRIST TOGETHER
Today we are remembering and being called to support the Missionary
Appeal. The missionary work of the
Church is universal. We are asked today
to financially support and to pray for the men and women throughout the world
who are spreading the gospel message.
Not just words of hope, but, many and varied acts of compassion and
love. The missions bring hope and love
in both words and deeds. Today is a
time for us to thank them with our financial support and prayers. We must also not forget that we are all
called to be missionaries for Christ by virtue of our baptism.
According to the Webster Dictionary, a missionary is “a person undertaking
a mission - especially a religious mission”.
A mission is a task assigned. All of us must not hesitate to live the task
assigned to us by Christ Himself. What
is the task? To proclaim God’s glory,
to live in His love and be His presence to all those we encounter. Where?...Here! When?...Now! How…? In
limitless and varied ways that I know do not need to be explained! As our Parish Mission Statement reads…a
parish community, answering Christ’s call to discipleship through Word,
Sacrament and Service. Proclaiming
God’s Hope and Love to all.
When it is all said and done, St. Paul tells us that there are really
only three things that remain…Faith, Hope and Love. All of us missionaries of Christ are responsible to bring Faith,
Hope and Love to everyone.
Praise Be Jesus Christ…Now and forever!
Fr. Roncase
Fr. Roncase will be away on a Workshop from
Tuesday morning October 21st, returning Thursday afternoon, October
23rd.

SCHOOL
NEWS
Week of October 13th
Preschool

children celebrated themselves at school, and thanked God for the special gifts
He has given them. Everyone loved
reciting the nursery rhyme, “Little Miss Muffet” and they had fun making spider
webs with marbles and paint.
K – In Math this week,
the Kindergarten started to practice writing and counting numbers 1-5. We counted many groups of thing and even
counted items in our classroom.

corn and write about their favorite foods.

read a photo essay called “Helping Out.”
The children have been discussing all sorts of ways they help out at
home and school. Their parents should
be proud of what they do!
3rd – In Math this week,
we are adding three 3-digit numbers. We
also started a new story about the Olympic Games. Students’ are very excited to discuss the Olympics especially after
watching them this summer.

Grade are writing personal narratives about a recent event. We have gone through the writing process to
arrive at a final copy. The children
are using a Thesaurus to make their words more vivid.

working hard taking the Terra Nova tests this week.
6th – The students are
finishing their first reading unit.

After the masses on

the parishioners for our food collection for Open Line. They need our help. This would be an excellent opportunity for
service. Please call Mrs. Daley to sign
up to help. We will also need more help
the following weekend to collect the food and take to Open Line. Thanks for serving others!
Permission slips were
due October 12th for the Fall Fest that we will be attending on
October 26th. If you did not
receive one, please let me know ASAP.
Also, I was given permission for sixth graders to be able to attend

also need a few additional chaperones that night!
It is the youth
leader’s prayer that each and every tween/teen build a closer relationship to
Christ and His Church.

DO YOU KNOW YOUR
TRIBUNAL?
The Tribunal is a
group of specially qualified priests, sisters, and lay persons whose
responsibility is to come to the help of people who have experienced divorce.
When a divorce
occurs, the Catholic Church always seems to balance two realities. One is the unbreakableness of the bond of
marriage. This is God’s law. It cannot be broken by human
intervention. On the other hand, the
Church is concerned about the spiritual welfare of the people involved. Was this a true marriage? Even though a Catholic marriage was
celebrated, was there perhaps some weakness in the consent of the parties
involved? The annulment procedure
addresses this problem without affixing blame on either party.
If you are divorced
or married outside the Catholic Church, please telephone or write the Tribunal
Office. Have no fear. All interviews are private.

Twenty-ninth
Sunday in Ordinary Time; World Mission Sunday
What does not belong to God?
Isaiah claimed that the pagan King
Cyrus was still the instrument of the one true God, whether the king knew it or
not. In other words, God’s domain knows no boundaries, no puny distinctions
between race and nations. All belong to God; all are beloved of God. The
antagonists of Jesus think they will trick him into either treason or
blasphemy, but he is onto their hypocrisy. As some scholars delight in noting,
when Jesus asks for a coin to see whose image is on it, it is because he
doesn’t have a Roman coin while the oh-so-pure Pharisees do! On this World
Mission Sunday, we who are baptized into Christ are reminded to see a
border-free world: Everything and everyone belongs to God. It is our part to
love and cherish each person, no matter what side of the border or the tracks
he or she lives on—even as we share the good news of the treasure we have found
in Christ Jesus.
Today’s readings: Isaiah 45:1,
4-6;

Thessalonians 1:1-5b; Matthew 22:15-21
“It is I who
arm you, though you know me not.”

A most gracious gift
Jealously guarding our time can be
considered a form of greed. We receive from God the gift of 24/7; we need to
give some of it as a gift. That’s why this week we observe Pastoral Care Week,
sponsored by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains. This week was
established to recognize the many ways church professionals respond with attentive
listening to those with physical, emotional, or spiritual concerns. Hospitals,
prisons, nursing homes, and your local parish will accept volunteers who wish
to donate their time for this important work. So cut loose a couple of hours a
week and give them to someone in need. Don’t be greedy now.
Today’s readings: Ephesians
2:1-10;
Luke 12:13-21
“Take care to
guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not
consist of possessions.”

Let’s get together
Saint Paul’s Letter to the
Ephesians, written during his imprisonment in Rome, reads as a testament to the
desire and struggle for unity in the early church. With the use of the words one
and together Paul implores the Christians of Ephesus, both Jew and Gentile,
to see themselves as bound through their being parts in the one body of Christ.
In these times more than any others it is astoundingly easy for us to avoid
associations with anyone outside our immediate circle of friends. Mass
communications such as the Internet and cell phones have paradoxically allowed
us to become more isolated from the stranger down the block. How does Paul’s
message about the body of Christ address the divisions in society today?
Today’s readings: Ephesians
2:12-22;
Luke 12:35-38
“In him the
whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord.”

Simchat Torah
The never-ending story
Jewish communities today celebrate
Simchat Torah (Hebrew for “rejoicing with the Torah”), the conclusion of
the annual cycle of public Torah readings and the beginning of a new cycle. The
last section of the Book of Deuteronomy and the first section of the Book of
Genesis are read out loud in the synagogue. In this way the cycle of readings
is unbroken. The Roman Catholic cycle of liturgical readings also comes up for
renewal every year on the first Sunday of Advent, about a month from now. The
Judeo-Christian community is part of the never-ending story of salvation. Now
is a good time to reflect on how important the cycle of holy readings is to
your own sense of religious identity.
Today’s readings: Ephesians
3:2-12;
Luke 12:39-48
“Of this
gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God’s grace that was
given me by the working of his power.”

Feast of John of Capistrano, priest
Preaching the fire
Jury duty is a privilege of living
in a just society. It can also be a vexing inconvenience you’d love to avoid.
Next time you get that little card in the mail, say a prayer to the patron
saint of jurists, John of Capistrano. His brilliant legal career in the 14th
century ended with a politically motivated prison stay. During this
disheartening season, he had plenty of time to meditate on his future. Upon his
release, he joined the Franciscans and became the “apostle of Europe” for his
itinerant preaching. Take a few steps out of your way for the good word.
Today’s readings: Ephesians
3:14-21;
Luke 12:49-53
“I came to
bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!”

Everywhere a sign
We’re used to thinking about God
as “hidden” or invisible, requiring an effort to perceive in the world around
us, and one whom we will know fully only when we die. After all, doesn’t Saint
Paul say, “Now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face”?
But it’s also true that signs of God, as Jesus said, lie everywhere and are as
obvious as a cloud bringing rain or a hot wind promising warm weather. So be a
meteorologist for God. The signs of Christ’s presence are all around. Where do
you see them?
Today’s readings: Ephesians
4:1-6;
Luke 12:54-59
“You know how
to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to
interpret the present time?”

Vocation awareness
Each of is called to build up the
body of Christ. That is our Christian commission. But just how we dedicate
ourselves to do that is up to us. We must each discern how we can best give
witness to our faith in the commitments we make and the work and service we
choose to do. Don’t be afraid to be who you feel called to be. As famed
Austrian psychiatrist Viktor Frankl wrote: “Everyone has his own specific
vocation or mission in life; everyone must carry out a concrete assignment that
demands fulfillment. Therein he cannot be replaced, nor can his life be
repeated, thus, everyone’s task is unique as his specific opportunity.” Make
the most of the opportunity given to you.
Today’s readings: Ephesians
4:7-16; Luke 13:1-9
“Some would be apostles, some
prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for
building up the body of Christ.”
