OUR PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

WE PROCLAIM GOD’S HOPE AND LOVE TO ALL.

LET US PRAISH CHRIST TOGETHER

 A letter from our Cardinal Archbishop.

February 19, 2009

Dear Faithful of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia,

As the Archdiocese of Philadelphia enters its third century of serving the people of God, it is with gratitude that I reflect on the profound faith, vision and generosity of the Catholics who have preceded us.  Along with the blessings of parishes, schools and institutions that we enjoy today, comes the responsibility for us to pass on to future generations all that we have received.  Last year, we recommitted ourselves as a Catholic community to serving God and neighbor as we celebrated our Bicentennial as a Diocese.  Taking the opportunity that the year-long Jubilee celebration presented, I invited a group of priests and lay people to assist me in identifying the needs of our Archdiocese now and in the years to come.  The fruit of our reflection is a concerted effort to meet the challenges of the Church at this historic time.

With confidence, I am pleased to announce HERITAGE OF FAITH~VISION OF HOPE, a capital and endowment campaign that will support the charitable, educational and pastoral needs of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.  Our aim is high:  minimally $200 million, but our needs are great.  These monies will be deposited into a separately incorporated 501 [c] [3] charitable fund to be used exclusively to meet six goals:  [1] to revitalize and renew parish life as the primary place in which we publicly live our faith, [2] to enable access to a high-quality Catholic education for many more of God’s children, [3] to renovate and restore the historic treasure that is the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, [4] to invest in priestly formation and campus infrastructure at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, [5] to ensure a dignified retirement and health care for retired priests, and [6] to respect the dignity and meet the basic needs of people in our region by providing vital human services.

Certainly the economic realities of the present are a cause of anxiety for all of us.  Our nation faces much uncertainty and some would argue that now is not the time to begin an endeavor such as this campaign.  The needs of the Archdiocese, however, cannot wait for the future.   They require our response today.  I am certain that this is the right response.  I am very pleased to report that the early results of HERITAGE OF FAITH~VISION OF HOPE are truly remarkable.  The pilot phrase, jut concluded, was nothing short of extraordinary.  Twelve parishes raised $9.5 million, exceeding their collective goal by $2 million.  The campaign is currently underway in more than 50 parishes, and in the coming 16 months, each of our 269 parishes and missions will participate.  To date, HERITAGE OF FAITH~VISION OF HOPE has received more than $40 million in gifts and pledges.  This inspiring display of generosity is a testament to the leadership of our priests, the commitment of campaign volunteers and the extraordinary charity of more than 2,500 donors.

I invite you to join me by making a sacrificial commitment to HERITAGE OF FAITH~VISION OF HOPE and am deeply grateful to those who have already done so.  Our combined efforts will make a lasting contribution to the future of the Church of Philadelphia and help the Archdiocese live out the Bicentennial theme:  Serving the People of God in the beginning, now and always.  For two hundred years our Heavenly Father has blessed the Church of Philadelphia.  Faith-filled people have humbly sacrificed their time, talent and treasure in building a community of believers with Jesus Christ as our foundation and cornerstone.  We look to the future with grateful hearts, united in prayerful solidarity for this historic endeavor.

Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the patronage of our Blessed Mother, Saint John Neumann and Saint Katharine Drexel, may the Kingdom of God continue to grow within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.  Through the generosity of many, may our HERITAGE OF FAITH~VISION OF HOPE campaign be successful.  May the Lord instill in us the desire to share our Heritage of Faith and invite others to embrace our Vision of Hope.

Sincerely in Christ,

Cardinal Justin Rigali

An after school program, C.A.R.E.S., is also available for students in Kindergarten through Eighth Grade.

SCHOOL NEWS: (continued)

Preschool – We learned about occupations in Social Studies this week.  The children became aware of a great number of occupations and the way these workers help us today.  Transportation, healthcare, sports, community helpers, communication, production, construction, and service workers were all included.  The children enjoyed dressing up in their future job attire at the end of the week.

Kindergarten – The Kindergarten talked about the Presidents of the past and present this week.  The students even made their own shadow portrait from the side.  We may have a future president among us!

1st – The First graders continue to work on becoming great readers.  This week they will be working with words that have the long vowel sound of “a”.  In Math, the first graders are learning to tell time and read calendars.

2nd – The Second graders celebrated Valentine’s Day on Friday.  Enthusiastically, they made “Heart” Rice Krispie Treats and passed out sweet treats and cards.  Then, they spent part of their afternoon with their sixth grade prayer partners exchanging cards, playing Valentine Bingo, having popcorn and juice, and watching a holiday movie.

3rd – This week, the Third Grade is continuing to solve multiplication problems.  Students will also learn how to solve word problems that involve multiplication facts.  In Science, students are learning about the various systems within their body.  Students will explore their five senses by taste testing an apple and describing how it feels.

4th – On Friday, our class took a trip to Doylestown’s Mercer Museum.  In connection with our study of Pennsylvania, we participated in demonstrations of colonial life as well as a tour of the fascinating museum.

5th – The Fifth graders are starting to work on their science fair projects.  They are investigating different things; photography, inclined planes, foods, bridges, radio waves and the list goes on.

6th – The Sixth Grade students are discovering ancient worlds through our literature stories.  Also, we are beginning Literature Circles in a few weeks.  The students are preparing their book choices.

7th – We are learning about writing effective research papers in ILA.  In Social Studies, we are studying about the Revolutionary War and have just completed reading the Declaration of Independence.

8th – In eighth grade Religion, we are learning about the marks of the Church and our responsibilities to help the Church grow.  In Social Studies, we are focusing on the American Industrial Revolution and the arrival of immigrants to our shores.  The students are learning about the changes in America at the turn of the 20th and how the large number of immigrants contributed to the economic and cultural growth of our country.

FAST AND ABSTINENCE AND

OTHER ACTS OF PENANCE FOR LENT 2009

The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons who are fourteen years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, February 25th on all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday.  Further, all persons eighteen years of age and older, up to and including their fifty-ninth birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light.

All the faithful are encouraged, when possible, to participate at Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently the Sacrament of Penance, to undertaking spiritual reading, especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate in parish Lenten devotions as well as Lenten education programs.  Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is especially recommended.

Elizabeth Ministry Update

Elizabeth Ministry has many involvement areas.  One area that is often overlooked by many is the ability or inability to conceive.  We are there for you if you wish to talk about your situation.  Below is a special prayer for someone who is experiencing this issue.

Prayer to Conceive or Adopt

Lord God, my desire for a child grows stronger everyday.  Cradle me in your love and calm my anxieties.  I look to you for insight so I can do my part in making my dream of parenthood a reality.  Stir in my heart the desire to follow your will in all my decisions.  Give me courage to trust your guiding presence.  Help me, Lord, to prepare myself for the day on which I may be blessed with a child.  Deepen my trust in your plan for our family.  Amen.

Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Something old, something new

We have—probably appropriately—mixed feelings about new versus old, stability versus change. Consider on the one hand those who, 40 years later, still complain about “all those changes” in the church, and on the other hand those who blanch at the church’s reluctance to embrace, say, a married priesthood. In Isaiah 43, God clearly speaks up for change, but not mere novelty. It is God’s desire to let go, indeed to forget, the wasteland of our sins, the deserts of our folly. God strikes a humanlike pose insisting that God is fatigued by our holding on to the old, perhaps the precious silliness that we can work out our own salvation. We cannot. We did not. God, for God’s own sake, remembers our sins no more. That is a change we can all embrace.

Today’s readings: Isaiah 43:18-19, 21-22, 24b-25; 2 Corinthians 1:18-22; Mark 2:1-12

“Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing.”

Feast of Polycarp, bishop and martyr

Faith creates the future

A passage from Philippians says that, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me” (4:13). Faith in God and communion with God in Christ unites us so closely with the Creator that God creates a future to accommodate our faith. God’s creative power is without limit and God’s love for us is infinite. Trusting in God we can literally accomplish anything. Saint Polycarp (d. c. 155 A.D.) was so convinced of the power of faith that he chose death rather than renounce his belief. We make the same choice every day when we opt for hope rather than despair.

Today’s readings: Sirach 1:1-10;

 Mark 9:14-29

“All things can be done for the one who believes.”

Tuesday, February 24

Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras

Give your body a rest

“Carnival” ends today, and tomorrow our time of attentiveness to spiritual matters begins. Being in the world and then removing ourselves for a time from the world are all part of the process of building God’s reign. Flesh and spirit are essential elements in Christian discipleship, as are justice and mercy and intimacy and awe. Knowing how to appropriately weave these elements in our daily lives is the role of wisdom. Use Lent as a time to give your full attention to prayer, spiritual reading, and devotional practices. Ultimately your body and soul will be the stronger and wiser for it.

Today’s readings: Sirach 2:1-11;

 Mark 9:30-37

“You who fear the Lord, hope for good things, for lasting joy and mercy.”

Wednesday, February 25

Ash Wednesday; day of fast and abstinence

Out and about

With the beginning of Lent—or at least this standing on the “front porch” of Lent between today and next Sunday—we might tend to look inward, to focus on prayer and repentance, on resetting our interior compass in more God-ward directions. But the three traditional practices of Lent—prayer, fasting, almsgiving (which work all year round, by the way)—point us out as much as in. We pray for both ourselves and others. We fast to clear our lives of what prevents us from seeing God in others and the world. And we learn to show more generosity to those around us. So this year don’t let yourself get Lenten cabin fever.

Today’s readings: Joel 2:12-18;

2 Corinthians 5:20-6:2; Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

“We are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us.”

Thursday, February 26

Thursday after Ash Wednesday

How to choose life

Choosing life over death seems like a no-brainer—instinctive, natural, wholesome. Yet, our culture, with its emphasis on escaping pain at all costs, can easily lead to emotional, spiritual, and physical death. Don’t want to face the humiliation of asking for forgiveness? Cut off your relationship with a loved one. Don’t want to be hurt by anyone? Close the door on intimacy. Don’t want to feel the pain of loss, confusion, or failure? Numb yourself with alcohol or drugs. Don’t want to deal with an unexpected pregnancy? Destroy the fetus. Don’t want to negotiate with your enemies? Bomb them into oblivion. Our faith offers a different strategy. It’s called love. Try loving yourself, others, and God just a little bit more to get you past the pain.

Today’s readings: Deuteronomy 30:15-20; Luke 9:22-25

“Moses said to the people: ‘Today I have set before you life and prosperity, death and doom.’ ”

Friday, February 27

Friday after Ash Wednesday; day of abstinence

The meat of the matter

Of the three disciplines of Lent—fasting, prayer, and charitable giving—it is certainly fasting and abstinence that got our attention back in the day. You could end up in hell for chomping a hotdog on a Friday, no questions asked. We’re still bound to observe the days of fasting and abstinence during Lent. But the prophet Isaiah reminds us to see fasting as a change of attitude about the poor, the hungry, and the oppressed. By repenting of our pursuit of comfort and turning our resources to the service of the needy, we help to “fulfill” the Lenten obligation to fast and abstain.

Today’s readings: Isaiah 58:1-9a;

Matthew 9:14-15

“Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?”

I heal homes

While, for most Americans, working has as its goal the creation of a stable home, more often than not it becomes the main hindrance to people’s coming together as a family. Making money often seems more important than the life and family income is meant to support. But, with the high cost of stability in America today, the majority of families find two incomes are needed simply to stay afloat, leaving many children lacking the presence and influence of their parents for much of their lives. We are called today by Isaiah to be rebuilders of our household. That, of course, begins at the home. This week try to hold at least one gathering within your home.

Today’s readings: Isaiah 58:9b-14;

Luke 5:27-32

“Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations.”

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER |

THE 2009 THEME

The 2009 service and offering will focus on indigenous women and children’s concerns of Papua New Guinea as their communities struggle to maintain their history and culture in an ever-changing world.

~ Facts about Papua New Guinea ~

The independent state of Papua New Guinea consists of more than 600 islands lying just below the equator on the western side of the Pacific

Ocean. The second largest country in the South Pacific, one of Papua New Guinea’s most spectacular features is its immense variety of landscape. From the Highlands Region with its wide ridges of rugged mountains, to

its Northern coastlines endowed with remarkable sandy beaches, coral reefs and rich maritime life, to the New Guinea Islands Region with a plethora of geothermal springs and active volcanoes, Papua New Guinea is the land of the unexpected, a land of great natural wealth and astonishing nature.

WHAT ARE THE ORIGINS OF WORLD DAY OF PRAYER?

The origins of World Day of Prayer date back to the 19th century when Christian women of the United States and Canada initiated a variety of cooperative activities in support of mission at home and in other parts of the world. These activities related to the following areas:

• Concern for those who are at risk around the world

• The role of prayer in mission work and peace.
