Don’t miss out on a great opportunity to provide your son or daughter with a Catholic School education at St. Philip Neri School!

Our school provides a safe, nurturing value-centered learning environment for students in Preschool through Eighth Grade.  The Hop Ahead Preschool has a program Tuesdays and Thursdays for 3 year olds and Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for 4 year olds from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  Our Kindergarten program is a full day program along with our First through Eighth Grade which begins at 7:45 a.m. and ends at 2:25 p.m.

An after school program, C.A.R.E.S., is also available for students in Kindergarten through Eighth Grade.

If you would like any additional information on our school or would like to register your child for the 2009-2010 school year, please call the school office at 215-679-7481. When registering your child for Preschool, please have a copy of your child’s immunization records.  If registering for Grades K through 8, please have the following at registration: original birth certificate, copy of baptismal certificate, and current immunization record as required by the State of PA at the time of registration.

School begins on September 8, for Grades 1 to 8.

SCHOOL CLASSROOM NEWS

Preschool – Many thanks to everyone who came to visit at our “May Play Date” on Friday.

Kindergarten – We have been working on addition and subtraction in Math.  We used students, cubes, food, and anything else we could add and subtract.

First Grade here we come!

1st – We wrote stories about being nature detectives.  We also finished up our Money unit in Math and are now working on measurement.

2nd – To finish up our measurement unit in Math, the children measured S’mores, our class guinea pig.  We will see how much he has grown during this year in centimeters and pounds.  There is a big planter with growing parsley on our windowsill for him to eat.  It is his favorite food.

3rd – Students are learning about immigrants.  They made a poster that displays information about an immigrant they have interviewed or read about. Students are reading a play called “The Crowded House.”  They will then perform the role of a particular character.

4th – Equivalent Fractions and Simplifying are our current Math concepts.  Students are manipulating fraction strips to show equality.  If they find three examples of fractions used in the “real world”, they earn a paycheck!

5th – The students are excited to start learning about ecosystems.  They will make their own ecosystem and keep a journal of it.

6th – The students did an excellent job performing in the Spring Concert last week.

In ILA, the students are continuing their work with Literature Circles.  We are creeping closer to our 300 books read goal.

7th – The students are having fun learning about plants and their structures.

8th – Last week, the Eighth Grade traveled to Bishop Shanahan to participate in Chastity Day.  This is an annual event sponsored by Generation Life inviting all 8th grade students in archdiocesan schools to come together and participate in a program emphasizing chastity and the message “I’m worth waiting for.” The program features a prominent guest speaker, video, and various skits.

Meeting St. Paul Today

Understanding the Man, His Mission, and His Message by Daniel J. Harrington, SJ

“The teachings of the letters of St. Paul permeate just about everything Christians believe and practice, but many of us know very little about this great apostle of the Church.”

Books and schedules are now available at the rectory during regular business hours.  The cost is $12.00/book.

Monday – May 18th:

1.         Who was Paul the Apostle?

2.         What do we learn from Paul’s letters?

Monday – June 1st:

3.         What do we learn from Later Pauline Letters?

4.         How might we interpret A Pauline Text Today?

5.         What can we learn from Paul today?

General questions to think about each week:

Did I read something that was new information or a new idea?

Did I read something that affirmed what I presently think or believe?

Did I learn something that surprised me?

Did I read something that made me think in a different way?

Did I read something that had me wondering what others thought?

YEAR OF SAINT PAUL

June 28, 2009 – June 29, 2009

Pope Benedict XVI grants a Plenary Indulgence for the year of Saint Paul.

What is an Indulgence?  “Every sin has consequences.  It disrupts our communion with God and the Church, weakens our ability to resist temptation, and hurts others.  The necessity of healing these consequences, once the sin itself has been forgiven, is called temporal punishment.  Prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and other works of charity can take away entirely or diminish this temporal punishment.  Because of the fullness of redemption obtained for us by Christ, the Church attaches to certain prayers and actions an indulgence or pardon, that is, the full or partial remission of temporal punishment due to sin.  Christ, acting through his Church, brings about the healing of the consequences of sin when an individual uses such a prayer or engages in such an action.”

(United States Catholic Catechism for Adults)

During the year of Saint Paul, the Holy Father has granted a plenary (or full) indulgence to the faithful who:

Sixth Sunday of Easter

The collection for new life

They’ll pass the basket this Sunday for the Catholic Communication Campaign. It’s one of the ways we get the word out, telling others about the great joy we have in the Risen Christ. Another way to share our faith is to live what we believe. When our lives proclaim the love of God to others, and the forgiveness that is ours in Christ, we unleash a mighty power. People yearn for what we have, and the power of God’s Spirit is awakened in them. Yes, let’s put money in the collection, but let’s also strive to inject new life into the world around us.

Today’s readings: Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48; 1 John 4:7-10; John 15:9-17

“While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word.”

Feast of John I, pope, martyr

No-win situations

“Between a rock and a hard place” describes those unenviable times when you can’t win—and will probably lose—whichever way you go. Popes have not been immune from similar binds. Despite his protests, the sixth-century Pope John I was sent by a king, Theodoric, to try to get an emperor, Justin, to tone down a decree against heretics, the Arians. It was also a threat: Don’t succeed, and there will be trouble for your flock back home. When John returned to Italy, Theodoric accused him of conspiring with Justin and had him thrown in jail, where he died of ill-treatment. When you’re in a situation where it’s hard to see the best way to go, ask yourself which course of action brings the most good and the least bad to all those involved.

Today’s readings: Acts 16:11-15; John 15:26-16:4a

“Indeed, an hour is coming when those who kill you will think that by doing so they are offering worship to God.”

Who’s in charge here?

Ever wonder just what a belief in Jesus saves us from? It’s simple: Jesus saves us from ourselves and a warped worldview that puts us in power instead of someone infinitely more competent: God. Once we let go of our illusions of control and accept God’s direction, our burdens are lifted and we feel compelled to live our lives for others: to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, free the prisoner, and gather to offer praise and thanksgiving for the way that has been lit for us. Remember to follow the leader today.

Today’s readings: Acts 16:22-34; John 16:5-11

“ ‘Men, what must I do to be saved?’ And they said, ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus.’ ”

Feast of Bernardine of Siena, religious, missionary

Busy, busy, busy

In these days of frequent job changes and overwork, the modern multi-tasker might look to Saint Bernardine (1380-1444). With some companions he set in order a hospital for plague-sufferers when no one else wanted to go near it. He then joined the Franciscans and lived quietly but later was called to what became his favorite activity: preaching. Offered the position of bishop of Perugia, he turned it down but did accept a leadership role with the Franciscans, where he promoted education among the friars. He then “retired” to resume his true bliss as a traveling preacher. However many activities you choose and responsibilities you are asked to take on, remember to keep them grounded in God.

Today’s readings: Acts 17:15, 22-18:1; John 16:12-15

“ ‘In him we live and move and have our being’ ”

Feast of Christopher Magallanes

Dying to find a better way

Christopher Magallanes was a priest in Mexico during a difficult time in Mexican history. On the heels of the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1917, the Catholic Church and the Mexican state were at loggerheads. Magallanes wrote and preached against armed rebellion but was falsely accused of promoting armed uprising during what came to be called the Cristero Rebellion. Arrested in 1927 on his way to celebrate Mass, he gave his few possessions—as well as absolution—to his executioners. His last words were “I die innocent, and ask God that my blood may serve to unite my Mexican brethren.” Since 1929 church and state in Mexico have avoided further violent conflict and are on much better terms than in the past. Pray for peaceful resolutions to conflicts in the world today.

Today’s readings: Acts 18:1-8; John 16:16-20

“Very truly, I tell you . . . you will have pain, but your pain will turn into joy.”

Feast of Rita of Cascia, religious

Look again at your lost causes

Saint Rita, patroness of lost causes, was married at 12 and endured years of abuse from her husband before he was murdered. Still, she forgave her husband before he died and later reconciled her family to his murderers. Then Rita spent the last years of her life in the convent where she had wanted to be from the beginning. If Rita had not taken the long view, if she had not supported her desire with prayer and active, faithful waiting, her life would surely have ended up a “lost cause.” Sometimes what seems like a “lost cause” is only an incomplete picture, an unfinished story. What in your life feels like a “lost cause”? How can you take the long view? And what can you do in the meantime?

Today’s readings: Acts 18:9-18; John 16:20-23

“So you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.”

Coworkers for Christ

The 12 apostles did a great job at teaching and spreading the Good News of Jesus, but they weren’t the only ones. The New Testament has many references to women and men, married couples, and single people who were leaders in the early church. Saint Paul often wrote of these leaders, noting how indispensable they were to the ministry of the church. In the Acts of the Apostles we are introduced briefly to Priscilla and Aquila, a wife and husband team who worked in Corinth and Ephesus. The two are presented as well-known and well-respected partners in ministry in the early church. Spend some time with Acts 18 and learn more about how this couple worked together to spread the Good News.

Today’s readings: Acts 18:23-28; John 16:23b-28

“[Apollos] began to speak boldly in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained the Way of God to him more accurately.”
