ARCHDIOCESAN NEWS

YEAR OF SAINT PAUL

June 28, 2009 – June 29, 2009

Pope Benedict XVI grants a Plenary Indulgence for the year of Saint Paul.  What is an Indulgence?  “Every sin has consequences.  It disrupts our communion with God and the Church, weakens our ability to resist temptation, and hurts others.

The necessity of healing these consequences, once the sin itself has been forgiven, is called temporal punishment.  Prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and other works of charity can take away entirely or diminish this temporal punishment.  Because of the fullness of redemption obtained for us by Christ, the Church attaches to certain prayers and actions an indulgence or pardon, that is, the full or partial remission of temporal punishment due to sin.  Christ, acting through his Church, brings about the healing of the consequences of sin when an individual uses such a prayer or engages in such an action.”

(United States Catholic Catechism for Adults)

During the year of Saint Paul, the Holy Father has granted a plenary (or full) indulgence to the faithful who:

            Make a good confession

            Receive Holy Communion

Pray for the Holy Father’s intention

Visit a Holy place, church or shrine which

honors the Apostle to the Gentiles.

Cardinal Rigali has designated the following official sites:

Cathedral of Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul

            Saint Paul Church, Philadelphia

            Saint Paul Church, Norristown

DO YOU KNOW YOUR TRIBUNAL?

The Tribunal is a group of specially qualified priests, sisters, and lay persons whose responsibility is to come to the help of people who have experienced divorce.

When a divorce occurs, the Catholic Church always seeks to balance two realities.  One is the unbreakableness of the bond of marriage.  This is God’s law.  It cannot be broken by human intervention.  On the other hand, the Church is concerned about the spiritual welfare of the people involved.  Was this a true marriage?  Even though a Catholic Marriage was celebrated, perhaps there was some weakness in the consent of the parties involved?  The Annulment Procedure addresses this problem without affixing blame on either party.

If you are divorced or married outside the Catholic Church, please telephone the Tribunal Office.  Have no fear.  All Interviews are private.

Solemnity of Pentecost

Fresh breath

One of the strangest things Jesus ever did after the Resurrection, from our fastidiously clean, middle-class American perspective, was to breathe on his disciples. It’s something we just don’t do—unless, of course, we are trying to save a life. Linguistically, we translate as “breath” both the Hebrew word ruah and the Greek word pneuma. In both languages the same word has several meanings: breath, wind, spirit. However we strive to picture it—fire hovering above us or breath whispered into us—the Spirit of God is absolutely necessary for life but cannot be pinned down. It inspires; it rushes upon us; it cannot be contained—any more than can our love, our forgiveness, our compassion, our joy.

Today’s readings: Acts 2:1-11; 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13 or Galatians 5:16-25; John 20:19-23 or John 15:26-27; 16:12-15

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.”

Feast of Justin, martyr

Faith makes sense

Saint Justin had an education devoid of religion. But his intense desire to find God and the truth of God led him to study scripture and prayer and eventually become a Christian. The example of the Christian martyrs impressed him greatly. He had his chance to follow in their footsteps (in 166 A.D.) by professing his faith before a judge in Rome. Legend says he was asked, “Do you think that by dying you will enter heaven and be rewarded?” To which he replied, “I don’t just think so. I am sure of it!” For Justin the Christian faith just made sense. And once he accepted Christ, he was unconvinced by anything else.

Today’s readings: Tobit 1:3; 2:1a-8; Mark 12:1-12

“I . . . walked in the ways of truth and righteousness all the days of my life.”

Feast of Marcellinus and Peter, martyrs

How far will you go?

In the 1988 movie The Seventh Sign, Demi Moore’s character Abby Quinn fears for her unborn son as apocalyptic events erupt throughout the world. She experiences dream after dream in which she is asked with increasing intensity, “Will you die for him?” It’s not often we are faced with this question, but some are. Martyrs, like Moore’s character, are given an impossible choice, but it is in their terrible leap of faith that witnesses to the “more than” of the gospel, the call to lay down one’s life for another. In this spirit we celebrate the feast of Marcellinus and Peter and all martyrs who gave their lives for the gospel. In what ways have you made sacrifices for the sake of a loved one or because of your belief in God?

Today’s readings: Tobit 2:9-14; Mark 12:13-17

“Give to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

Feast of Charles Lwanga, martyr, and companions, martyrs

Faith beyond all understanding

Charles Lwanga was a leader and instructor of a small Christian community of boys in the corrupt court of King Mwanga of Uganda in the late 19th century. When the king learned that Lwanga was baptizing his young charges, he ordered them all killed. There is much we do not understand about humankind’s capacity for cruelty. Yet our belief in Jesus Christ can provide us with the same joy exhibited by the young Christians who were forced to march under extreme conditions for miles to their death. By all accounts they laughed and sang the whole way. Pray for the “peace that surpasses all understanding” today.

Today’s readings: Tobit 3:1-11a, 16-17a; Mark 12:18-27

“You are righteous, O Lord, and all your deeds are just.”

Soul power

The idea of the soul has a long and complex tradition in Jewish and Christian thought. Beginning with the earliest words of Genesis, where God breathes life into humanity and gives us a “living soul,” thinkers and theologians have tried to define what exactly the soul is. Saint Augustine of Hippo, one of western Christianity’s most influential early thinkers, described the soul as “a special substance, endowed with reason, adapted to rule the body.” The present Catechism of the Catholic Church defines the soul as “the innermost aspect of humans, that which is of greatest value in them, that by which they are most especially in God’s image: ‘soul’ signifies the spiritual principle in humans.” However you choose to understand the word, you can be assured of this: We are called to love our God with all of it!

Today’s readings: Tobit 6:10-11; 7:1bcde, 9-17; 8:4-9a; Mark 12:28-34

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.”

Feast of Boniface, bishop, martyr

“Timberrrrr!”

The legend of ax-swinging Saint Boniface, the seventh-century apostle to Germany, chopping down the sacred oak of Thor and thus converting the pagan god’s followers to the more powerful Christ is irresistible. There is something attractive about such zeal, and it symbolizes well Boniface’s two strongest traits: orthodoxy and loyalty to the pope. In our own day religious zeal is often equated with extremism, but does such loyalty always have to mean chopping down someone else’s sacred tree? A fiery faith, the conviction of our own Baptism and Confirmation, should be an equally unstoppable force for defending the poor, the rights of women, immigrants, and all others forgotten or despised.

Today’s readings: Tobit 11:5-17; Mark 12:35-37

“The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.’

Feast of Norbert, bishop

The rise and fall—and fall and rise—of a saint

Saint Norbert has a Paul-like conversion story, though in his case—unlike Paul’s—there literally was a horse, who was spooked in a storm. Lying on the ground, Norbert, a high-society young man who liked parties, began to wonder if God were trying to tell him something. So he sold everything he had and gathered a small evangelistic community around him that became the Norbertines. When he was chosen bishop of Magdeburg and presented himself at the door of the bishop’s house, the porter would not let him in, telling him to get in with the other beggars. When he realized his error, the porter was very sorry, but Norbert told him, “Never mind, dear brother. You judge me more correctly than those who brought me here.” Let the rises and falls in your own life point the way to God.

Today’s readings: Tobit 12:1, 5-15, 20; Mark 12:38-44

“Bless God and acknowledge him in the presence of all the living for the good things he has done for you.”
