OUR PARISH MISSION
STATEMENT
WE ARE THE CATHOLIC PARISH COMMUNITY OF ST. PHILIP
NERI, ANSWERING CHRIST’S CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP THROUGH WORD, SACRAMENT AND
SERVICE.
WE PROCLAIM GOD’S HOPE AND LOVE TO ALL.
FROM THE PARISH
OUTREACH DESK OF
SISTER PATRICIA
KELLY, M.S.B.T.
A recent article in a newspaper titled, “The National Catholic Reporter
(N.C.R.) quotes Jesuit Priest and author Tom Sweetser, as saying: “Parishioners
matter. People need to sign up at a
parish, attend Mass, join in the Mass singing and connecting with people,
contribute their time and resources, and pray at least six minutes a
day.”….Once you get people praying, they will want to get involved.”
What caught my eye was “pray at least six minutes a day.” Our United States Conference of Catholic
Bishops (USCCB), in their document, Communities of Salt and Light,
tell us: “Our Social Ministry must be
anchored in prayer, where we uncover the depths of God’s call to seek justice
and pursue peace. In personal prayer,
the reading of the Scriptures and quiet reflection on the Christian vocation,
we discover the social ministry of every believer. In serving those in need, we serve the Lord. In seeking justice and peace, we witness to
the reign of God in our midst. In
prayer we find the reasons, the strength, and the call to follow Jesus in the
ways of charity, justice, and peace.”
It seems we need to pray more than six minutes each day!
Another example of the social mission of the Church that is lived out
here, in St. Philip Neri Parish (one was given last month; ie Friendly
Visitors) is our Bereavement Support Groups.
When people loose a loved one, the family members – especially the
spouses – are devastated. Our
Bereavement Support Group Facilitators are understanding and compassionate
people. They themselves, have lived
through grief. Those in the support
groups help each other live through grief.
They understand and support one another, and, with the Facilitators,
pray that the compassionate Hearts of Jesus and Mary absorb their sorrow.
Jesus, Himself, wept at the death of his friend, Lazarus. He shared his tears with his mother, Mary
and with Martha, the sister of Lazarus.
He knew the value of their support.
In St. Philip Neri Parish, Bereavement Support Groups are held twice a
year – fall and spring. In November, a
Mass of Remembrance celebrates the lives of all of our parishioners who went
home to our Father in the past year.
Along the same line of Bereavement Support Groups is a new ministry of
service that will soon start in our Parish, the Martha Ministry. Watch the Bulletin during the summer for
further information!
Until next month, I leave you in the warmth of the Most Blessed
Trinity.
YEAR of the PRIEST
Prayer for Priests
Ever-living
God and Father of us all, you give to your Church the Priesthood of your Son,
Jesus, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, you provide holy priests for a holy
people.
We pray for
all our priests, who announce the Word of God and celebrate the Sacraments.
For those
who are young and those who are old, for those who serve in difficult and
trying circumstances, for those who are faithful and those who are faltering,
and for those who have died.
We entrust
all our Priests to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to the Immaculate Heart of
Mary that they may preserve with fidelity to you and to your Church.
With Saint
John Vianney, patron of priests, we pray that our priests may never fail to
lead us to you.
We ask this
through Christ our Lord. Amen.

ARCHDIOCESAN
NEWS
Office of the
Cardinal
Dear Brothers and
Sisters in Christ,
With these words, holy priests for a holy people, I am
pleased to announce the observance of the Year
of the Priest in the Archdiocese
of Philadelphia.
Our Holy Father,
Pope Benedict XVI, has called for this year of grace for the whole Church as a
new opportunity for priests to grow in holiness and live more fully united to
the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and for all the members of the Church to recall the
essential role of priests among us and in society.
The universal
observance of the Year of the Priest
began with the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus just celebrated this
past Friday, June 19th, and will conclude on the same date next year
in Rome with a worldwide meeting of priests with our Holy Father. A significant part of this Year of the Priest is the commemoration
of the 150th anniversary of the death of Cure of Ars, Saint John
Vianney, who continues to inspire all of us as a priest ever at the service of
his people.
As Archbishop of
Philadelphia, I invite everyone in the Archdiocese, all priests and all the
faithful, in solidarity with our Holy Father, to observe the Year of the Priest as a splendid
opportunity to reflect on the gift of priesthood of Jesus shared with his priests. This gift belongs to the whole Church and is
for the whole Church. I ask of you,
sharers and benefactors of this gift from Jesus, to participate wholeheartedly
in this Year of the Priest here in
Philadelphia.
Our primary
participation is through prayer. Pray
for priests. Pray for priests as they
announce God’s Holy Word and celebrate the Sacraments. Pray for their holiness. An archdiocesan Prayer for Priests will be
made widely available for use in our parishes, schools, and religious education
programs and other institutions. I
invite you to pray this prayer as a families, in parish groups, and alone. I especially encourage praying for priests
in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament.
I also invite you
to participate through the many programs to be offered throughout the year by
the Archdiocese and our parishes. Those
to be offered by the Archdiocese have been published in the Catholic Standard and Times, this past
Thursday, June 18th. One of
these programs includes an opportunity for every parish for one week during
this year to pray for our priests through the intercession of St. John Vianney
as his statue and relic travel from parish to parish throughout the
Archdiocese.
This Year of the Priest offers all of us a
unique occasion for many blessings. May
our observance of this Year of the Priest truly provide the Archdiocese
of Philadelphia with holy priests for a
holy people!
Sincerely in
Christ,
Cardinal Justin
Rigali
Office of the
Cardinal
June 19, 2009
Dear
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The Peter’s Pence Collection, in support of
the Holy Father’s spiritual and charitable works, will be taken up on the
weekend of June 27 and 28, 2009.
Through your generous participation in this special appeal, you share in
the concern of the Successor of Peter to respond with emergency financial
assistance to our brothers and sisters who suffer as a result of war,
oppression, disease and natural disaster.
In
September of 2006, Pope Benedict XVI gave a homily in which he explained that
those who are baptized create one family of believers who are never alone. The Peter’s
Pence Collection unites in solidarity to the Holy See and its works of
charity to those in need. Your
generosity allows the Pope to respond to our suffering brothers and sisters with
promptness, love, and compassion, so God’s people will not feel alone in their
time of misfortune.
With
gratitude for your past contributions and relying on your compassion for the
needy, I ask you to respond generously once again to this collection according
to your means.
Sincerely
in Christ,
Cardinal
Justin Rigali

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In the
beginning
Did you ever wonder why God created the world and
everything in it? It seems to beg the question: Obviously it’s an accomplished
fact, so why ask why? But asking why tells us something about God. Did God need
to create the world, because God was lonely or something? No: God—being
God—doesn’t need anything. What did happen is that God’s love overflowed, and
that happy flood produced creation. Yes, there were some flaws, which led to
some much bigger problems such that divine intervention has been required.
Remember, though, that all creation and creatures—and the latter includes
you—were born in love. And so the only proper thing to do is give that love
back to the world around you, and so ultimately back to the One who made it
all.
Today’s readings: Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24; 2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15; Mark 5:21-43
“God created
all things so that they might exist.”

Solemnity of Saint Peter and Saint
Paul, apostles
Unlocking
the doors of hope
When Jesus gave Saint Peter the keys of the kingdom,
he encouraged him to use them to set people free and give them access to the
grace of God. But we can set them free. For this reason Saint Paul wrote that
he was being “poured out like a libation.” Saint Paul devoted everything he
had—his money, his time, his energy, every resource including his life—to the
work of freedom. As the Year of Saint Paul comes to a close today, the church
rededicates itself to the work of the gospel: that all people may be released
from the bondage of poverty, violence, and oppression to enjoy the freedom of
God’s children.
Today’s readings: Acts 12:1-11;
2 Timothy
4:6-8, 17-18; Matthew 16:13-19
“The Lord
will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for his heavenly kingdom.”

Have a
little faith
One of the most famous of Jesus’ miracle stories is
his calming of the waves. You remember: He and the disciples are out on a lake
and a big wind comes along and starts to swamp the boat. The disciples panic and
go to Jesus—who’s sleeping peacefully. You’d think these men, some of whom are
fishermen and presumably have been through storms before, would keep their
nerve a little better. “Lord, save us!” they cry nonetheless, and Jesus, before
settling the storm, chides them for their fragile faith. Christ has
faith-building power over the sea, and by implication over the chaos people
frequently encounter. This tale tells its hearers that Christ will protect his
own. Have some faith in his care today.
Today’s readings: Genesis 19:15-29; Matthew 8:23-27
“Why are you
afraid, you of little faith?”
Wednesday, July 1
Feast of Junípero Serra, priest
The
zeal of approval
Zeal is a complicated thing, and Junípero Serra was
both a zealous and complicated man—which belies his religious name, taken for
one of Saint Francis’ first companions: Brother Juniper, known for childlike
simplicity! While some contemporary critics correctly remind us that Serra’s
18th-century efforts at disciplining Native Americans were sometimes brutal,
there is no doubt about his enormous personal sacrifices on their behalf and
his stance to protect them against punitive military expeditions. While we may
look at zealots today with suspicion, the opposite is complacency, which is no
virtue. Though you may be wary of excess, ask yourself: Is there any zeal in
me? For what will I sacrifice comfort, even heroically? For whose benefit
beyond my own family and inner circle will I extend myself only because they
are in need of help that I can give?
Today’s readings: Genesis 21:5, 8-20; Matthew 8:28-34
“I will make
a great nation of him.”

Worth
the sacrifice
Commentaries on the Genesis story of Abraham’s
binding of Isaac usually focus on Abraham’s great faith in God, demonstrated by
his willingness to sacrifice his son on God’s command. But what about Isaac’s
faith? In modern times Isaac is typically portrayed as a young boy, but most
traditional sources claim he was full grown at the time of the incident,
certainly old enough to resist or at least flee from his elderly father.
Abraham was, after all, 100 years old when Isaac was born. So perhaps today we
can reflect on the great faith Isaac displayed in his willingness to trust his
father, even to the point of a sacrificial death.
Today’s readings: Genesis 22:1-19;
Matthew 9:1-8
“Take your
son, your only son Isaac . . . and offer him there as a burnt offering on one
of the mountains that I shall show you.”
Friday, July 3
Feast of Thomas, apostle
Have
you seen the Lord?
It can be lonely to listen to your friends talk
about their spiritual experiences if yours are of the more mundane variety. Not
everyone has apparitions in a grotto or hears voices in empty churches (and
it’s not always a good thing if you do). If your friends levitate, weep with
ecstasy during prayer, or rave about their insights from spiritual direction,
be happy for them. But also remember good apostle Thomas, who missed out on the
big spiritual moment—being one of the first to see the risen Jesus—but made up
for it later with the biggest, most whopping profession of faith in all of
scripture: my Lord and my God!
Today’s readings: Ephesians 2:19-22;
John 20:24-29
“So the other
disciples told [Thomas], ‘We have seen the Lord.’ ”

Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary;
Independence Day
A day
of celebration
Quick: What are the days the church especially
celebrates the Blessed Virgin Mary? The Assumption in August. Yes. The
Immaculate Conception in December. Good. And January 1. Right—Mary the Mother
of God. There are some other ones, too, but in the church’s calendar almost
every Saturday also celebrates the mother of Jesus. Today is Independence Day
and a Saturday. How then to remember Mary between the barbecues and the
fireworks? Maybe think about some of the values she lived—openness to God,
selflessness, courage—and then put them into practice today yourself. They’re
good things for someone of any country to do.
Today’s readings: Genesis 27:1-5, 15-29; Matthew 9:14-17
“New wine is
put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.”
