OUR PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

WE ARE THE CATHOLIC PARISH COMMUNITY OF ST. PHILIP NERI, ANSWERING CHRIST’S CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP THROUGH WORD, SACRAMENT AND SERVICE.

WE PROCLAIM GOD’S HOPE AND LOVE TO ALL.

FROM THE PARISH OUTREACH DESK OF

SISTER PATRICIA KELLY, M.S.B.T.

Through Catholic Social Teaching, we learn that we are to preach the Gospel in faith and charity.  We express faith and charity by “answering Christ’s call to discipleship through Word, Sacrament, and Service.”  The root word of discipleship is disciple; meaning one who has been taught.  We are disciples and apostles when we nurture and support one another in our faith community and beyond.

How do we come to know one another in our faith-community in order to nurture and support them?  St. Philip Neri Parish has many community-building activities wherein we can get to know one another – activities such as monthly breakfast, bingo, picnic, carnival, car show, Mass of Remembrance, Bible Study, volunteer dinner, Welcome Committee, garden club, social club, (travel), the Craft Guild, and other groups.

Another form of community-building (although it is not its focus) has to do with service activities and Catholic Social Teaching.  As mentioned in earlier columns, we are called to service through our Baptism.  There are many opportunities for service, here in St. Philip Neri Parish.  Mentioned in earlier columns are Friendly Visitors and Bereavement Support Groups. We also have our Respect Life Ministry, and annual Giving Tree, and those who serve by peeling potatoes for the monthly Breakfast.

In how many community-building and service activities do you participate?  Several people have said to me:  “How can we get new people to volunteer?  It seems that the same people go from one service to another, and can always be relied upon, but no new people come forward. Why is that?  Since I do not know the answer to that question, I ask you, the non-participants:  “Why don’t you do something for God through service to his people?  This question does not deny that, here in St. Philip Neri Parish, we are blessed to have compassionate, caring people who give of their time and talent through service.

How pleased our Triune God must be to see His people being served!

Another example of God’s people being served is our H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Enthusiastically) Program.  In 2008, H.O.P.E. had 309 requests for services.  The services were performed, giving 607 hours of service.  So far in 2009, we have had sixty-four (64) requests of service which were performed in 122 and a half hours, plus twenty (20) hours of administrative time.  These service hours were performed by approximately twenty-five (25) generous people.

H.O.P.E. requests for services – which are free – include, but are not limited to:  transportation to shopping, therapy sessions, doctors offices, light lunch preparation, occasional child care, light housekeeping, etc.

This column began by my saying that we are called to preach the Gospel.  We can preach the Gospel through the community-building and service activities of our Parish.  St. Francis of Assisi is quoted as saying:  “Preach the Gospel.  And if you have to, use words.”

I leave you in the warmth of the Trinity.

TROOP 591 NEWS

Troop 591, established in 1964, is the Boy Scout Troop of St. Philip Neri Parish, open to all boys in the Upper Perkiomen Valley age 11 years and older.  Troop 591 strives to teach its scouts leadership, citizenship, personal enrichment and community service.

Troop 591 is looking for adults, young and old, to compliment the Troop’s current adult leadership.  These leadership roles are typically held by the parents of past, current and prospective scouts, but the Troop is looking for non-parents to serve in this Parish ministry.  We are looking for adults interested in sharing their time and talent with the scouts.  Ideal candidates would be former scouts who would like to re-engage with scouting or people with no prior scouting experience who enjoy teaching and guiding young people.

If interested, please contact Andrew Souder, Troop Committee Chairman, at 215-804-0845 or andrew@rafind.com.

Also, Troop 591 is looking for two items:  a storage shed, 10’x16’ or larger, in good condition (to store scout gear); and a 10 foot truck trailer (to haul scout gear).  If anyone would like to donate such items, please contact the troop.

YEAR of the PRIEST

Prayer for Priests

Ever-living God and Father of us all, you give to your Church the Priesthood of your Son, Jesus, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, you provide holy priests for a holy people.

We pray for all our priests, who announce the Word of God and celebrate the Sacraments, for those who are young and those who are old, for those who serve in difficult and trying circumstances, for those who are faithful and those who are faltering, and for those who have died.

We entrust all our priests to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, that they may persevere with fidelity to you and to your Church.  With Saint John Vianney, patron of priests, we pray that our priests may never fail to lead us to you.

We ask through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

SAINT JOHN MARIE VIANNEY – CURÉ OF ARS

Patron of Priests

John Vianney was born at Dardilly, near Lyons, France on May 8, 1786, son of Matthew and Marie Vianney. In his youth John taught other children catechism.  Though he was of average intelligence, his formal knowledge was extremely limited.  As he studied for the priesthood, he found the study of Latin excessively difficult.  One of his fellow students, Matthias Loras, afterwards the first Bishop of Dubuque, Iowa, assisted him with his Latin lessons.  On August 13, 1815, he was ordained a priest.

After serving as a parochial vicar in Ecully, France he was assigned to the parish of Ars-sur-Formans, a tiny village near Lyons.

This parish suffered from lax attendance and little

spiritual activity. The Curé John Vianney began visiting his parishioners, especially the sick and poor, spent days in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, did penance for his parishioners and led his people by example. He had the gifts of discernment of spirits, prophecy and even worked miracles. His life of penance consisted in constant prayer and sacrifice, while just getting 2-3 hours of sleep each night.  Crowds came to hear him preach

and went to Confession to him throughout the day because of his reputation for holiness and his loving concern for penitents.  By 1855, there were 20,000 pilgrims a year to Ars.

After spending 40 years as the parish priest, John Marie Vianney died on August 4, 1859.  He is interred in the Basilica of Ars.  Pope Pius XI canonized him on May 31, 1925.

The relic and icon of Saint John Marie Vianney, the patron of Priests, will be here in our Church from August 13th to August 20th.  You are invited to venerate this relic as you pray for all priests during this Year of the Priest.  During the weekdays, it will be in the Chapel.

DO YOU KNOW YOUR TRIBUNAL?

The Tribunal is a group of specially qualified priests, sisters, and lay persons whose responsibility is to come to the help of people who have experienced divorce.

When a divorce occurs, the Catholic Church always seeks to balance two realities.  One is the unbreakableness of the bond of marriage.  This is God’s law.  It cannot be broken by human intervention.  On the other hand, the Church is concerned about the spiritual welfare of the people involved.  Was this a true marriage?  Even though a Catholic marriage was celebrated, perhaps there was some weakness in the consent of the parties involved?  The Annulment Procedure addresses this problem without affixing blame on either party.

If you are divorced or married outside the Catholic Church, please telephone the Tribunal Office.  Have no fear.  All interviews are private.

Please write or call:

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Waste not, want not

According to AmpleHarvest.org, one out of eight Americans needs food assistance but can’t get fresh produce from local food pantries. Meanwhile, an estimated 100 billion pounds of food is thrown away annually in the United States. The website provides a way for food pantries and gardeners with extra produce to find each other. Food pantries can be listed in a central directory so that local gardeners can find them and, garden-by-garden, help diminish hunger in America. Think twice the next time you throw good food away; instead, help multiply the loaves and fishes in your community.

Today’s readings: 2 Kings 4:42-44; Ephesians 4:1-6; John 6:1-15

“Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost.”

Are we ready for that mustard seed to grow?

Jesus uses the parable of the mustard seed to illustrate that when the reign of God takes root even from the smallest seed, it will grow to great size. But is that what most of us want? Do we really hope to see the establishment of God’s reign—where the lowly are lifted up and the mighty are brought to their knees? Scripture scholar John Dominic Crossan points out that in Mediterranean areas the mustard bushes that sprout from tiny mustard seeds are considered weeds—a nuisance to any garden. Hmm . . . how many of us find God’s ways an irritant to our best-laid plans? God’s reign is messy when judged by worldly standards. Weeds are welcome.

Today’s readings: Exodus 32:15-24, 30-34; Matthew 13:31-35

“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed . . . It becomes a large bush.”

Heed the weeds

Anyone who has kept a garden knows that with weeds timing is everything. If the weeds are left to grow for too long, they cannot be pulled without damaging or uprooting the valuable crop. They must grow together or die together. When Jesus compares the world to a field and the righteous to good seeds, the weeds become the actions that lead away from Christ. If we aren’t careful, we may find that the weeds have overgrown us and cannot be cleared without doing much damage to our hearts. What weeds can you clear from your life?

Today’s readings: Exodus 33:7-11; 34:5b-9, 28; Matthew 13:36-43

“The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man; the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom.”

Feast of Martha

Please sit still for a moment

“Martha, Martha!” Whenever someone calls my name twice, I pay attention. It evokes a childish, “What have I done now?” response. But Jesus’ double “Martha, Martha” seems like gentle, particular words of care for someone who finds it hard to stop the spinning wheels of her mind and the anxious work of her hands. She knows and trusts her work. While Jesus is kind to her, he sees things quite differently, and he is likewise firm and clear. What he needs from Martha, his friend, is more akin to what all of us need from those we love: less work and more presence. Because most of us are such good workers, we easily assume that good and hard work is the best we have to offer others—our practical way of caring. It may be this but only to a point. What others really need is more of our time, our attention. That is the “better part” that Jesus says Martha’s sister, Mary, has chosen in sitting near Jesus and listening. It’s a part we can all choose, and it won’t be taken away.

Today’s readings: Exodus 34:29-35;

John 11:19-27 or Luke 10:38-42

“Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things.”

Always at your side

If you read the biblical story of the Israelites’ journey from slavery in Egypt to the land God promised them you’ll see the trip was not a smooth one. Conflicts with Moses, their great leader, as well as with their ultimate leader, God, hunger, and other obstacles plagued them along the way. But they made it, and one of the reasons they made it was because no matter what, God stayed with them. God goes with those on the lifelong journey of faith. It’s nice to have a traveling companion, isn’t it?

Today’s readings: Exodus 40:16-21, 34-38; Matthew 13:47-53

“Whenever the cloud was taken up from the tabernacle, the Israelites would set out on each stage of their journey.”

Feast of Ignatius of Loyola, priest

A prayer for generosity

The spirit of giving doesn’t come naturally to all of us. Saint Ignatius, the founder of the Jesuits, had a prayer for that, as he did for most things: “Eternal Word, only begotten Son of God, teach me true generosity. Teach me to serve you as you deserve, to give without counting the cost, to fight heedless of wounds, to labor without seeking rest, to sacrifice myself without thought of any reward, save the knowledge that I have done your will.” When the giving gets tough, the tough get on their knees and pray for wider hearts.

Today’s readings: Leviticus 23:1, 4-11, 15-16, 27, 34b-37; Matthew 13:54-58

“When you enter the land that I am giving you . . . you shall bring the sheaf of the first fruits of your harvest to the priest.”

Mistaken identity

When word came to King Herod about Jesus and what he was doing and saying, Herod mistook him for John the Baptist—whom he had murdered—come back from the dead. Perhaps Herod’s error grew out of a fear that John had come back to haunt him or seek revenge of some kind. Fear can lead people to many kinds of misjudgments: avoiding problems, damaging relationships, not speaking out, holding back from taking steps to go forward in life. Move through fear to see clearly and act with courage.

Today’s readings: Leviticus 25:1, 8-17; Matthew 14:1-12

“At that time Herod the ruler heard reports about Jesus; and he said to his servants, ‘This is John the Baptist; he has been raised from the dead.’ ”
