OUR PARISH MISSION
STATEMENT
WE ARE THE CATHOLIC PARISH COMMUNITY OF ST. PHILIP
NERI, ANSWERING CHRIST’S CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP THROUGH WORD, SACRAMENT AND
SERVICE.
WE PROCLAIM GOD’S HOPE AND LOVE TO ALL.
LET US PRAISE
CHRIST TOGETHER
Missionary Appeal
Weekend of August
22nd/23rd
Next weekend, we welcome Sr. Marie Janesch to our parish. She will make an Appeal on behalf of the
Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart, a religious congregation of over 800
members, many of whom serve in mission lands throughout the world. I urge you to welcome her and make a
generous sacrifice for the spread of the Gospel in mission lands.
WHO ARE THE MSC?
MSC are Latin initials for Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. They are women who believe that nothing is
more important than the saving power of God’s love.
HISTORY
The Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus were founded in
Hiltrup, Germany, in 1899 by Hubert Linckens, MSC.
Their first overseas ministry was for the purpose of assisting the
Missionary Fathers of the Sacred Heart in their missionary endeavors in Papua
New Guinea.
Because of the quick growth of the young community, new apostolates
were opened in various countries.
In 1908, they were invited to the U.S.A. to work among the Slovak
immigrants. Today, Missionary Sisters
of the Sacred Heart can be found in the United States, Germany, Spain, Korea,
Peru, Dominican Republic, Namibia, Australia, India, Italy, Papua New Guinea, Philippines,
Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico, Rumania, China, Paraguay and Keriberti.
SPIRITUALITY
Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus are women who “have
come to know and to believe in the love of God has for us” (1 John 4:16) and
who burn with a passion to share that love with others.
Our founder, Father Hubert Linckens, MSC, gave us Sisters his own
graced heritage, presenting Jesus Christ as God’s way of loving-with a human
heart. “For this heart,” he said, “you
are in the midst of the world!”
The vision of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart is rooted in a spirituality of the
heart which focuses and empowers their lives to be all-embracing expressions of
God’s compassionate and healing love to a broken and wounded society. They believe in the healing power of God’s
love to effect peace and reconciliation in our world.
MISSION
Our vocation-our commitment to Christ and the missionary mandate to the
Church-is a vowed form of discipleship lived through community. We serve among God’s people-especially the
suffering, the needy and those whose rights are disregarded-through a variety
of gifting ministries in the U.S.A. and abroad. “Our mission is not finished until the whole world has turned to
Christ.” (H. Linckens)
There will be a second collection next weekend after communion for the
work of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart.
Praise Be Jesus Christ…Now and forever!

KNIGHTS CATHOLIC CLUB
The Blue Knights Catholic Club is a boys' club aimed at teaching
the truths of the Catholic faith to boys through Scripture, saints'
biographies, sports/games, crafts and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
This program developed by Major Dan McGuire maps out nine virtues for boys ages
5 and up in the first year, and then follows up with three years covering nine
catechetical lessons each. The boys keep track of their progress by earning
badges that form shields to proudly display on their Crusader breastplates.
Each year also has its own colored cape (blue, green, red, or gold) to mark
your Blue Knight's advancement through the program. If you are interested in
this program, please contact Bill Orr at 215-679-8223 or dana@goodnews4health.net

TROOP
591 NEWS
Troop 591, established in 1964, is the Boy
Scout Troop of St. Philip Neri Parish, open to all boys in the Upper Perkiomen
Valley age 11 years and older. Troop
591 is looking for adults, young and old, to compliment the Troop’s current
adult leadership. These leadership
roles are typically held by the parents of past, current and prospective
scouts, but the Troop is looking for non-parents to serve in this Parish
ministry. We are looking for adults
interested in sharing their time and talent with the scouts. Ideal candidates would be former scouts who
would like to re-engage with scouting or people with no prior scouting
experience who enjoy teaching and guiding young people. If interested, please
contact Andrew Souder, Troop Committee Chairman, at 215-804-0845 or andrew@rafind.com.
Also, Troop 591 is looking for two items: a storage shed, 10’x16’ or larger, in good
condition (to store scout gear); and a 10 foot truck trailer (to haul scout
gear). If anyone would like to donate
such items, please contact the troop.

RESPECT LIFE BULLETIN BRIEFS
“The National Vietnam Memorial in Washington,
D.C., is a shiny black wall that stretches 492 feet and lists the names of 58,022
known Americans killed in that war. If
such a wall listed the names of the children killed by abortion since 1973, the
wall would be more than 60 miles long!
The casualties of our wars put together are fewer than the casualties
from abortion in just a single year! (Priests for Life)

Twentieth
Sunday in Ordinary Time
What’s more
Some might know that “eating the
body of Christ” at the Lord’s Supper is best understood as a symbol of the
Lord’s love and presence among us. But that’s not enough. The genteel young
Southern fiction writer Flannery O’Connor must have shocked her companions when
in conversation about the Eucharist, she once objected, “Well, if it’s a
symbol, to hell with it.” In one of her letters, she wrote that the Eucharist
“is the center of existence for me; all the rest of life is expendable.” The
meaning of the Eucharist resists taming; it refuses to be reduced to a mere
anything. Another American writer, poet William Carlos Williams, maintained
that in a poem there are “no ideas except in things.” The Eucharist is not an
abstract idea. It is an experience of mystery that will always be more than our
struggle to articulate it. It is a “more” that is always shocking.
Today’s readings: Proverbs 9:1-6; Ephesians 5:15-20;
John 6:51-58
“Come, eat of
my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed.”

Possessed or saved?
Why does having many possessions
stand in the way of our spiritual freedom? If that is the case, why do we go to
such great lengths to acquire things, and why is it so difficult to part with
them, even when their usefulness to us is long gone? Perhaps it’s because we
all need something we can hold onto, and holding onto things we can see and
touch is certainly an understandable response to insecurity. But ultimately
perishable things will fail to deliver the hoped-for security, as each of us
learns sooner or later in life. Our relationships with God and our fellow human
beings are the only sources of security that can endure. As spiritual giant Thomas
Merton put it, “In the end, relationships save everything.”
Today’s readings: Judges 2:11-19; Matthew 19:16-22
“He went away
grieving, for he had many possessions.”

The art of the possible
“With God all things are possible”
is surely one of the most well-known of Jesus’ statements. It’s short,
optimistic, and, most important, we want it to be true. But when we look
around, the scripture passage that more likely comes to mind is, “If the Lord
is with us, why has all this happened?” The ancient Israelite leader Gideon
said that. What he didn’t know and we forget is that God holds the entire
picture of creation, while we see only a very small piece. It’s like viewing a
corner of a painting and wondering why we can’t make sense of the whole canvas.
What’s a believer to do? Believe. Believe in a loving, merciful God who makes
all things possible. That’s what Gideon did.
Today’s readings: Judges 6:11-24a; Matthew 19:23-30
“If the Lord
is with us, why then has all this happened to us?”

Feast of John
Eudes, priest
Love for the least
Saint John Eudes (1601-1680) was a
famed preacher of “parish missions” and a promoter of the devotions to the
Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Even early in his
priestly life he brought the love and mercy of God to those struck by the
plague. He ministered among and helped them when he could in both body and
spirit. Who in your life is ill in body, spirit, or mind? How can you help
them?
Today’s readings: Judges 9:6-15; Matthew 20:1-16
“The last
will be first, and the first will be last.”

Feast of
Bernard, abbot, doctor of the church
Calm in the storm
Bernard of Clairvaux, a French
abbot of the 12th century, had a tremendous influence on the course of
Catholicism at a time of great strife and intrigue in the church. He reformed
monastic life, brought Mary to the forefront of popular piety, and mediated
between princes and popes. He was also instrumental in the founding of the
Knights Templar, who became models of the medieval ideal of a Christian knight
and were heavily involved in the Crusades. Through all the tumult of his times,
Bernard managed to maintain his contemplative spirit. Our own day is equally
tumultuous. What can you do to cultivate a contemplative spirit in the midst of
it all?
Today’s readings: Judges 11:29-39a; Matthew 22:1-14
“The wedding
is ready, but those invited were not worthy.”

In-laws who got along
In-laws often get a bad rap.
Mothers-in-law in particular have a reputation for being overbearing,
especially when it comes to their sons’ wives. True, there are some delicate
relationships out there, but there are others who blow this stereotype out of
the water. Take Ruth and her mother-in-law, Naomi, who are written about in the
Book of Ruth in Hebrew scripture. The two women experience the deaths of their
husbands. Though free to leave, Ruth remains with her mother-in-law, fiercely
standing by her side. Somehow—through their family ties, shared grief, and
faith in the God of Israel—the two women remain committed to one another. Who
are the proverbial “in-laws” in your life, those people with whom you’ve formed
lasting relationships despite the jokes and assumptions of others?
Today’s readings: Ruth 1:1, 3-6, 14b-16, 22;
Matthew 22:34-40
“Where you
go, I will go; where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people,
and your God my God.”

Feast of the
Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Shine up that crown!
A generation ago Catholics didn’t
worry that Mary was never crowned Queen of Heaven in scripture. She was queen
of our hearts, and that was enough. Still, the question must be asked: In what
way is her queenship “real”? Mary’s royal stature has meaning for us apart from
whatever it may mean in the realm of God. We are likewise invited to be a holy
and royal people, to live as heirs in God’s kingdom. What Mary already
possesses is a vision of what awaits us as her children in faith. Treat those
around you like royalty today. They are!
Today’s readings: Ruth 2:1-3, 8-11; 4:13-17;
Matthew 23:1-12
“Why have I
found favor in your sight, that you should take notice of me?”
