OUR PARISH MISSION
STATEMENT
WE ARE THE CATHOLIC PARISH COMMUNITY OF ST. PHILIP
NERI, ANSWERING CHRIST’S CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP THROUGH WORD, SACRAMENT AND
SERVICE.
WE PROCLAIM GOD’S HOPE AND LOVE TO ALL.
From the Parish
Outreach desk of:
Sister Patricia
Kelly, M.S.B.T.
Last month I asked the question:
In how many community-building and service activities do you participate? Let me share with you what our United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops have said in their document, “Communities of
Salt and Light…..
“But in some parishes, the social justice dimension of parish life is
still neglected, under developed, or touch only a few parishioners.
We have much to learn from those parishes that are leading the way in
making social ministry an integral part of parish ministry and
evangelization. We need to build local
communities of faith where our social teaching is central, not fringe; where
social ministry is integral, not optional; where it is the work of every
believer, not just the mission of a few committed people and committees.
For too many parishioners, our social teaching is an unknown
tradition. In too many parishes, social
ministry is a task for a few, not a challenge for the entire parish community. We believe we are just beginning to realize
our potential as a community of faith committed to serve those in need, and to
work for greater justice”.
One of the roles that our Bishops have is the role of teaching. They have taught us to live the social
dimension of the Gospel. References to
our social dimensions are in the Scriptures; both the Old and New Testaments.
How can we do this? Through a
variety of community-building and service activities, I have already told you about
Friendly Visitors, H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Enthusiastically)
and Bereavement Support Groups.
This month, I’d like to explain another way to live and preach the
Gospel. It is a service that will begin
in October, 2009. The name of the new
service is Martha Ministry.
As you recall from the Scriptures, when Jesus’ friend, Lazarus, died,
Martha told Jesus that if he had been there, her brother would not have
died. Martha is frequently associated
with understanding the pain of losing a loved one.
Martha Ministry should work like this:
when someone dies, the Rectory will notify the Martha Ministry
Coordinator, who will contact a Martha Ministry (M.M.) who is on “duty” that
week. The Martha Minister will call the
family of the deceased and ask to visit them, bringing a casserole or a
cake. If the person agrees to a visit,
a Martha Minister will go to the home.
In addition to the food gift, the M.M. will offer to assist in any way
they can; e.g., make a lunch, meet someone’s bus, go on errands, etc. The Martha Minister will also attend the
Funeral Liturgy.
The family of the deceased will receive a brochure re: Bereavement
Support Groups, and our Mass of Remembrance.
They will also receive “Care Notes” about grief. A year later, they will receive a card on
the Anniversary of the deceased person’s death. All this is to let the grieving family know that their parish
faith community cares for, and supports them in their shadowed time.
If you are interested in serving others as part of Martha Ministry,
please call Kathy Talbot at:
215-541-0250.
Please make some time to consider how our Triune God may be calling you
to serve Him.
I leave you in the warmth of the Trinity.

The Church Ministry Institute of the
Archdiocese of Philadelphia offers a three-year certificate program designed to
enrich the faith formation of adults.
One specific goal of the program is to foster a greater knowledge and
deeper appreciation of the Catholic Church and her teachings. It also prepares
lay men and women for ministry and service to their parish or other
Apostolates. Sessions begin in
September and end in May. Classes are
held one evening a week from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM. Brochures outlining the program and the various locations are in
the vestibule of the church.
If you are interested in attending the program
or would like additional information, please contact the rectory at

BLUE
KNIGHTS CATHOLIC CLUB
The Blue Knights Catholic Club is a boys' club aimed at teaching
the truths of the Catholic faith to boys through Scripture, saints'
biographies, sports/games, crafts and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
This program developed by Major Dan McGuire maps out nine virtues for boys ages
5 and up in the first year, and then follows up with three years covering nine
catechetical lessons each. The boys keep track of their progress by earning
badges that form shields to proudly display on their Crusader breastplates.
Each year also has its own colored cape (blue, green, red, or gold) to mark
your Blue Knight's advancement through the program. If you are interested in this
program, please contact Bill Orr at 215-679-8223 or dana@goodnews4health.net

CAPE MAY TRIP
By Patrick Souder
On August 8-10, boy scouts from Troop 591 and cub scouts from Packs 591
and 170 (and family members) camped at the Coast Guard Training Facility in
Cape May, NJ. Friday night, we set up
our tents/camp and
enjoyed a quick snack of tomato pie before hitting our sleeping bags. After a delectable breakfast at the
visitors’ mess hall, some scouts went deep sea fishing for four hours, catching
flounder, sand
sharks and bluefish, while the other scouts toured the Cape May Zoo. We rendezvoused back at the campsite for a
satisfying lunch and then proceeded down to the dock where we toured three
Coast Guard ships, used by the Coast Guard for rescue missions, homeland
security, drug interdiction, etc. We
hiked back from the docks, and a brisk game of baseball was followed by dinner
at the mess hall. After awaking from a
rainy night, we ate breakfast and attended Mass at the base chapel. Then we hit the Wildwood boardwalk/beach, broke camp and
caravanned home to St. Philip’s.
The following scouts and guests attended the event: Cub scouts: Liam Daley, Andrew Klugh, Garrett Young, Matt Souder and Brandon
Naylor; Boy Scouts: Philip
Myers, Pat Souder and Tyler Stephenson; Guest: Dominic Souder.
We thank our leaders and parents for another great weekend trip.

attended the Rank of Eagle after completing his Eagle Board of Review. Adam has
become the troop’s 14th Eagle Scout since it’s inception in 1964.
For Adam’s Eagle project he led the construction and installation of three new
flagpoles and a paver patio at the new Red Hill Fire House. Troop Committee
Member Tony D’Ippolito accompanied Adam to his Eagle Scout Board of Review.
Please welcome us in congratulating Adam on his accomplishments.

RESPECT LIFE BULLETIN BRIEFS
“We believe that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is
a ‘Gospel of Life’,…we cannot simultaneously commit ourselves to human rights
and progress while eliminating or marginalizing the weakest among us. Nor can we practice the Gospel of Life only
as a private piety. American Catholics
must live vigorously and publicly.”
(United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 1998)
GOVERNMENT HEALTH
CARE
While this
legislation is still in draft form, the request for action at the local level
is imperative. What we do know is that
we must take action now to share our thoughts and beliefs with our national legislators
in time for them to consider incorporating these points when deliberations
resume in September. We need to ensure that
the new legislation preserves freedom of conscience for health care
professionals and does not violate the right to life by allocating tax revenues
for abortions.
Please contact
Senator Casey and Spector along with your representative in congress and
strongly encourage them with an insistent plea to uphold the dignity and
sanctity of life with this new legislation.
To contact your
representatives and senators directly, please go to www.nchla.org and click on Action Alerts where
you will be able to find the names of your US Representatives and Senators.
The message is
simple: “Support genuine health care
reform that respects the life and dignity of all. A fair and just health care reform bill must exclude
mandated coverage for abortion, and uphold longstanding laws that restrict
abortion funding and protect conscience rights.”
If you have any
questions, the Respect Life Office is readily available to assist you. They can be reached at 215-587-5661.
Thank you for your
support of this vital issue.
Invest just five minutes a day, and your faith will deepen
and grow—a day at a time.

Twenty-first
Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jesus takes us beyond our beyonds
Joshua and
the gospel-writer John are people confronted with decisions. Joshua lays it on
the line: Choose which god you are going to serve. In the end, like Joshua and
his household, the Israelites chose the Lord, but it wasn’t easy. Jesus’
teaching was also hard to swallow for some. “How can he give us his flesh to
eat?” This uncomfortable equation shocked the first people to hear Jesus say
it. We conclude our month-long Sunday meditations on the Eucharist aware that
the gospel constantly draws us beyond “I can’t” or “I don’t understand” or
“that’s too much to ask.” Jesus’ way will never be domesticated; he constantly
invites us deeper, beyond what seems our capacity.
Today’s readings: Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b;
Ephesians 5:21-32 or 5:2a, 25-32; John 6:60-69
“As for me
and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

August 24
Feast of
Bartholomew, apostle
Silent witness
Although he appears as a witness
to the Ascension, Saint Bartholomew is one of the apostles of whom no
individual word or act is reported in the New Testament. In fact we can’t be
sure even of his name—some experts consider the “Nathanael” who appears in
John’s gospel to be the same person. What we do know is that he served as a
witness to the message and mission of Jesus. Those who serve quietly, without
fanfare, also are great witnesses in their own right. Even if you are not in
the spotlight, trust that your good works will not go unnoticed by the One who
sees all.
Today’s readings: Revelation 21:9b-14; John 1:45-51
“Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is
no deceit.”
Tuesday,
August 25
Feast of Louis
of France
Keep it clean
King Louis IX of France
(1214-1270) built numerous hospitals, monasteries, and churches and led his
people into what was called the golden century of Saint Louis in which France
was the cultural and political capitol of Europe. Yet most remarkable was
Louis’ piety and love for the liturgy. He attended Mass twice daily and filled
his royal court with chanting of the Liturgy of the Hours. While his power was
vast and absolute, he was saved from vainglory in part by the upbringing of his
mother, Blanche of Castile, who legendarily told her son: “I love you my dear
son, as much as a mother can love her child; but I would rather see you dead at
my feet than that you should commit a mortal sin.” What failings do you have to
repent?
Today’s readings: 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8; Matthew
23:23-26
“First clean
the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may become clean.”
Wednesday,
August 26
Don’t leave it to the experts
When you go to church it may be
hard to see beyond what the priests, deacons, lectors, cantors, and others are
doing at the moment (unless of course you’re one of those people!). Behind that
hour of Mass, however, are many hours of meetings, practice, and personal
preparation that go into leading worship. But the work everyone else in a faith
community does—including yours—is just as important. Supporting yourself, and
maybe a family, as well as all the other tasks of life, if you do them in a
spirit of faith and generosity, go just as far in building the kingdom of God.
And perhaps the most important thing you do is worship itself—liturgy
originally meant a “public service or work.” Think of ways your work is part of
the great work.
Today’s readings: 1 Thessalonians 2:9-13; Matthew
23:27-32
“We worked
night and day, so that we might not burden any of you while we proclaimed to
you the gospel of God.”
Thursday,
August 27
Feast of
Monica
Speak up!
What we know
about Saint Monica, like many women in the early centuries of the church, comes
from the perspective of a male writer. In Monica’s case that writer was her
son, Saint Augustine of Hippo. He described Monica as a model of womanly
virtue—hard working, persevering, submissive, and holy. But we know nothing
about Monica in her own words. We do not even know if she could write. In
addition, women at that time were considered inferior to men, and women’s
importance was tied largely to the social status of the men in their lives.
Monica is like many women, past and present, who lack the social power to speak
for themselves. Perhaps today we can entrust to Monica’s saintly patronage
people who are defined by others and struggle to give voice to their own
experience.
Today’s readings: 1 Thessalonians 3:7-13; Matthew
24:42-51
“Night and
day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face.”
Friday,
August 28
Feast of
Augustine, bishop, doctor of the church
Peace time
Looking for a good book to read
this summer? Try Augustine’s Confessions, a classic of literature by one
of the greatest thinkers of all time. Augustine’s account of his search for God
contains all the elements of a great adventure story: exotic locations,
decadence and dissolution, an overbearing mother, philosophy, theology,
despair, and finally a profound religious experience: “No further would I read;
nor needed I: for instantly at the end of this sentence, by a light as it were
of serenity infused into my heart, all the darkness of doubt vanished away.”
Augustine’s search for the only source of true peace is our search, too. “You
have made us for yourself, O Lord,” he wrote, “and our hearts are restless
until they rest in you.”
Today’s readings: 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8; Matthew
25:1-13
“For God did not call us to impurity but in
holiness.”
Saturday,
August 29
Feast of the
Martyrdom of John the Baptist
Villains can be good, too
We tend to divide up people into
good guys and bad guys. Yet the truth about any given person defies those
categories. Just think if you were to be permanently judged and labeled based
on a particularly bad day when all your weak points showed up like yellow
dandelions on a green lawn. Take ol’ Herod for instance, one of the villains of
the gospel stories. Despite his bad behavior, Mark presents him as having a
heart with at least a reasonable potential for goodness. And really, isn’t that
true for all of us? Maybe we shouldn’t be so quick to judge.
Today’s readings: 1 Thessalonians 4:9-11; Mark
6:17-29
“Herod feared
John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him.”
