OUR PARISH MISSION
STATEMENT
WE ARE THE CATHOLIC PARISH COMMUNITY OF ST. PHILIP
NERI, ANSWERING CHRIST’S CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP THROUGH WORD, SACRAMENT AND
SERVICE.
WE PROCLAIM GOD’S HOPE AND LOVE TO ALL.
LET US PRAISE
CHRIST TOGETHER
January 1st marks the beginning of another calendar
year. For most businesses and
organizations, July 1st begins a new Fiscal Year; that is true here
also at St. Philip Neri. There is
another major beginning here at the parish; the day following Labor Day. This is another beginning. Everyone is back from vacations, school
begins and we are thrown into another year of activities. As I think back on the past year, I am
always amazed at what has taken place here in the parish with all our
activities. So many Ministries, the
formation of new Ministries, the Thank-You Party, Sunday Breakfasts, Carnival
and Car Show, the construction of the outdoor Stations, the Enthronement of the
St. Philip Neri Relic, Parish Mission; the list goes on and on!
For all you, the family parish of St. Philip Neri have done, I thank
you! One more week of rest, we begin
again.
God Bless and be with us in this coming year of activity.
Praise Be Jesus Christ…Now and Forever!

BLUE
KNIGHTS CATHOLIC CLUB
The Blue Knights Catholic Club is a boys' club aimed at teaching
the truths of the Catholic faith to boys through Scripture, saints'
biographies, sports/games, crafts and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
This program developed by Major Dan McGuire maps out nine virtues for boys ages
5 and up in the first year, and then follows up with three years covering nine
catechetical lessons each. The boys keep track of their progress by earning
badges that form shields to proudly display on their Crusader breastplates.
Each year also has its own colored cape (blue, green, red, or gold) to mark
your Blue Knight's advancement through the program.
If you are interested in this program, please contact Bill Orr at
215-679-8223 or dana@goodnews4health.net

ARCHDIOCESAN NEWS
RESPECT LIFE BULLETIN BRIEFS
“Next to the Blessed Sacrament itself,
your neighbor is the holiest object presented to your senses. If he (or she) is your Christian neighbor,
he (or she) is holy almost the same way, for in him (or her) also Christ…the
glorifier and the glorified…is truly hidden.
(C.W. Lewis, The Weight of Glory”)
GOVERNMENT HEALTH
CARE
While this
legislation is still in draft form, the request for action at the local level
is imperative. What we do know is that
we must take action now to share our thoughts and beliefs with our national
legislators in time for them to consider incorporating these points when
deliberations resume in September. We
need to ensure that the new legislation preserves freedom of conscience for
health care professionals and does not violate the right to life by allocating
tax revenues for abortions.
Please
contact Senator Casey and Spector along with your representative in congress
and strongly encourage them with an insistent plea to uphold the dignity and
sanctity of life with this new legislation.
To contact
your representatives and senators directly, please go to www.nchla.org and click on Action Alerts where
you will be able to find the names of your US Representatives and Senators.
The message
is simple: “Support genuine health care
reform that respects the life and dignity of all. A fair and just health care reform bill must exclude
mandated coverage for abortion, and uphold longstanding laws that restrict
abortion funding and protect conscience rights.”
If you have
any questions, the Respect Life Office is readily available to assist you. They can be reached at 215-587-5661.
Thank you for your
support of this vital issue.

Sunday in Ordinary Time
What is evil in your sight, I have done
Saying something mean about a
stranger across the room because of her appearance. Treating a janitor like the
invisible man, or dismissing a category of people as somehow subhuman or
unworthy. How many times have we done these things and not recognized the root
of sin in them? Even thinking badly of others affects our capacity to love
them—and love is the aim of the Christian life. In loving one another we love
God. What happens to our relationship with God when we disdain one another is
ugly to imagine. Think love, and loving acts will follow.
Today’s readings: Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8; James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27; Mark 7:1-8, 14-15,
21-23
“For it is
from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come.”

A message for all of us
When Jesus returned to Nazareth
and spoke prophetically, his hometown people rejected him. That foreshadowed
the reception he would receive from his own people in general. It is a pattern
repeated many times in history, from the time of the Jewish prophets who
suffered repudiation right through to our own era, when figures such as Martin
Luther King Jr. and Dorothy Day encountered stiff resistance to their prophetic
message. It does us well to give folks a second hearing if we find ourselves
made uncomfortable by their message. It may be the one we need to hear most.
Today’s readings: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Luke 4:16-30
“When they
heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage.”

Way to go! Great job!
What does encouragement look like?
A smile, a pat on the back, a kind word, an affirmation of effort or
accomplishment. Encouragement is not hard physical labor! But at times it might
as well be. Sometimes it just feels too hard to overcome inertia or leftover
anger to reach out to another—especially when that other has not given us
confidence when we needed it. Fortunately, though, encouragement carries its
own special energy. It is like a perpetual-motion machine that is capable of
reenergizing itself with the slightest nod. What’s more, it feels really good!
Consider this: What would our days look like if we spent our time finding ways
to offer encouragement to other people?
Today’s readings: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6, 9-11; Luke 4:31-37
“Therefore
encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.”

The miracle of healing
Love and affection expressed in
tender words and gentle actions engender hope in the human heart. And hope is
the foundation of all healing. There’s nothing magical about the process. Our
bodies are designed to be healed. Injury and illness are always followed by
healing and wholeness. The process may be short and complete or long, painful,
and only partially successful. And once in every lifetime, healing ends in
death, which, given what we believe, isn’t so bad after all. The first words of
healing are: “You’re going to be all right.” The final words: “Your sins are
forgiven; your life is eternal.” This good news, these words and gestures of
hope always begin the miracle of healing.
Today’s readings: Colossians 1:1-8;
Luke 4:38-44
“He laid his
hands on each of them and cured them.”

When the Good News was new
The biblical scholar Jerome Neyrey
once wrote of the early church: “We can never appreciate what it must have been
like to be catechized into the gospel of Jesus, told that in baptism we die
with him and rise with him. Powerful gifts of spirit and faith would flow and
people would sense how close God was to them.” It may indeed be hard today to
envision what it was like when the Christian faith was new, when it was unheard
of that people could actually find new life in the defeat of death, that the
power of God was so close you could feel it because Jesus had made it so. At
times we can feel spiritually or emotionally or even physically dead. But when
that happens we can also imagine how refreshing and exciting faith can be and
how much hope it can give.
Today’s readings: Colossians 1:9-14:
Luke 5:1-11
“May you be
made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power.”

A time for joy
From the moment you hit the
reception hall until the happy couple drives away, tin cans rattling and
tissue-paper flowers fluttering, it’s party time. Hors d’oeuvres piled high on
plates make the rounds, and sparkling beverages are liberally poured. The food
never stops coming, from the first salad to the final slice of much-decorated
cake. Music fills the hall and dancers demonstrate how each generation once cut
the rug. Cameras capture the joy of the hour with each flash. That is what
celebration looks like. Jesus says every hour is worth celebrating, for those
who believe.
Today’s readings: Colossians 1:15-20;
Luke 5:33-39
“You cannot
make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them, can you?”

Sabbath-keeping
Many people think Jesus condemned
strict observance of the sabbath when it came at the expense of life and
well-being. And that’s true. You’d recover your animal if it fell down a well
on the sabbath, wouldn’t you? You’d gather grain to feed yourself? In today’s
terms, you’d get your car towed if it broke down on a Sunday or go grocery
shopping if you were out of food, right? Of course you would. Jesus was making
a larger point about how the kingdom of God comes ahead of observances, and how
compassion for human need trumps the rules. Try putting the kingdom of God and
showing some kindness ahead of everything else, and you’ll make a sabbath of
your life each day.
Today’s readings: Colossians 1:21-23;
Luke 6:1-5
“The Son of
Man is lord of the sabbath.”
