OUR PARISH MISSION
STATEMENT
WE ARE THE CATHOLIC PARISH COMMUNITY OF ST. PHILIP
NERI, ANSWERING CHRIST’S CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP THROUGH WORD, SACRAMENT AND
SERVICE.
WE PROCLAIM GOD’S HOPE AND LOVE TO ALL.
We continue our
reflections on the Eucharist.
One
of the most frequently asked questions concerns the obligation to attend Mass
on Sunday. Article 2181 of The
Catechism of the Catholic Church states:
The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all
Christian practices. For this reason
the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation
unless excused for a serious reason or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this
obligation commit a grave sin.
In essence we are
obligated under the pain of mortal sin to attend Mass on Sundays and other days
of obligation. People struggle with
this for various reasons. The
Eucharistic Celebration (Mass) is at the center of all of our religious
practices. We celebrate new life at
Mass with Baptism (We have Baptism within Mass at 11:00 AM on the 2nd
Sunday of the month.). We celebrate the
uniting of two lives in marriage with a Nuptial Mass. We celebrate God’s gift of life and the promise of everlasting
life after earthly death with a Funeral Mass.
Each Sunday the people of God assemble to hear God’s Word and receive
Jesus’ Body and Blood as an act of faith, repentance and thanksgiving.
As you can see, the
Mass is the foundation of all of our religious practices. It is for this reason that we are obliged to
come together as God’s collective people.
But I like to look at Sunday obligation this way, also. We have chosen to be Catholic and we have
chosen (by acceptance of Baptism) to live a way of life that is different from
others. The Mass offers us the
opportunity to participate in the presence of Jesus through the celebration of
His Word (scripture) and in the Blessed Sacrament. Therefore, the obligation is not just to God. The obligation is to ourselves. In Baptism we pledged ourselves to live as
Priest, Prophet and King forever in God’s kingdom. We owe it to ourselves to participate at Mass and fulfill the
obligation we accepted. Failure to do
so places us in a state of serious sin unless there is legitimate reason.
I also want to look
briefly at the structure of the Mass.
While one part flows into the next the Mass is really two celebrations
where Jesus becomes truly present to us.
They are the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the
Eucharist.
The Liturgy of the
Word
includes the Introductory and Penitential Rites, the proclamation of the
scriptures, the homily, the Creed and the intercessory prayers. Every assembly of persons for the worship
and praise of God has a welcoming part.
Our priest who represents Jesus as the leader of the assembly welcomes
all present by offering the grace and peace of God to all. Before we go further we pause to acknowledge
our sins before God and each other. As
we do we ask forgiveness for the times we fail to live as we should.
The proclamation of
the scriptures follows. Jesus is truly
present to us in the proclamation of God’s Word. This is something we have overlooked or failed to recognize for
far too long. Scripture is God’s Word
reaching into the realm of humanity.
Following the scripture readings is the homily. A homily is neither a speech nor a
sermon. It is an exhortation by the
bishop, priest or deacon for us to accept what was just proclaimed for what it
is – the Word of God. The homily also
urges and instructs us to put God’s Word to work in our own daily lives.
After the scripture
readings and homily come our response: the Profession of Faith (Creed) and the
Prayers of Intercession. Having heard
God’s Word we are inspired to profess what we believe – what the Church
teaches. We then offer our prayers on
behalf of all humanity asking God’s mercy, blessing and protection for
all. The Church gives us specific
instructions as to the form and content of these prayers so that the needs of
everyone are brought to God through our prayer.
The Liturgy of the
Eucharist
begins with the Offertory where we offer to God all that we have in thanksgiving
for all that God has given us. The
bread and wine that will be offered on the altar to become the Body and Blood
of Jesus represents those blessings.
The
Eucharistic Prayer begins immediately after we sing the Holy, Holy, Holy. Only the priest says the Eucharistic
prayer. This beautiful prayer to the
Father (actually there are four to choose from for typical Sunday Mass along
with others specifically written for other celebrations such as funerals,
weddings, and other particular Masses) leads up to the Consecration of the
bread and wine that becomes the Body and Blood of Jesus. The Our Father and the reception of Holy
Communion follow the Eucharistic Prayer.
Mass concludes with a
final prayer, blessing and dismissal.
Sometimes there is a prayer before the blessing that asks God to bestow
His favor upon us in a special way. The
final words of the Mass sum up all that Jesus said and did. Jesus came to offer us God’s peace. At the beginning of each Mass our priest
begins by offering that peace again. At
the end of Mass, having been nourished by God’s Word and the Body and Blood of
Jesus we are instructed to go in peace:
Our Mass has ended. Let us go
in peace to love and serve our Lord. Or,
Go in the peace of Christ.
The Mass with its many
parts comprises the most beautiful prayer of the Church. Where else can we become one with God and
each other in such a dynamic way?
People who fail to recognize this need to look at their faith. They need to remember the promises they made
at Baptism and remember that they set themselves apart by the seal of the Holy
Spirit in Confirmation. May God give us
all the strength to use our faith and remain faithful to Him always.
Please remember that
you can send me your questions at anytime.
Just drop them in the Sunday collection basket, mail them to the rectory
office, or you can simply send them by e-mail to deaconmikefranks@verizon.net.
Next month we will
conclude our reflections on the Eucharist with a look at the Church’s teaching
about the real presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. We will also look at Benediction and its
relationship to the Mass. Until then
always remember: I love you all. Deacon Mike Franks

and Sisters in Christ,
Evangelization – Strengthening one’s own faith and
those around us…is the theme for this year’s National Collection
for the Black and Indian Missions. Your
financial contribution to this fund assists clergy, religious and lay
catechists, parishes, schools, and catechetical centers for the evangelization
of the Black and Native American peoples throughout our country. Locally, through grants awarded from this
collection, a number of parishes and organizations within the Archdiocese are
able to fund pastoral outreach and evangelization programs.
The collection for the Black and Indian
Missions will be held in all our parishes on the weekend of September 12 and 13, 2009. I ask your continued prayers and generous
financial support of this collection.
Sincerely in
Christ,
Cardinal
Justin Rigali
RESPECT LIFE BULLETIN BRIEFS
“[Children] have a right to be educated in
authentic moral values rooted in the dignity of human person. This brings us back to our consideration of the
centrality of the family and the need to promote the Gospel of Life…We need to
reassess urgently the values underpinning society so that a sound moral
formation can be offered to young people and adults alike.”
(Pope Benedict XVI, April 16, 2008)

Twenty-third
Sunday in Ordinary Time
Take it all in
In religion class an indignant
little boy, hands on hips, declares, “I don’t think it’s fair that blind people
have better hearing than the rest of us!” Recognizing an opportunity, the
teacher instructs her students to sit down, close their eyes, and listen. For
the next ten minutes the children hear the sounds they usually tune out—birds
chirping outside, a door closing down the hall, the drone of an airplane overhead—and
come away with a renewed sense of wonder and appreciation for their sense of
hearing. Today is a good day to celebrate our senses. We might close our eyes
for a few minutes in order just to listen, hold a loved one’s hand, or stop to really
smell the coffee—and taste it, too.
Today’s readings: Isaiah 35:4-7a; James 2:1-5; Mark
7:31-37
“He even
makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”

Labor Day
A labor of love
Labor Day is a good day to reflect
on the Catholic Church’s extensive body of social encyclicals. Rerum novarum
(Of New Things) issued in 1891 is the granddaddy of them all. Authors Tim and
Jean Unsworth wrote in Upon This Rock (ACTA, 1991): “This was the most
significant of all the encyclicals before or since. Rerum novarum broke
down the barriers that separated the church from the worker. Never before had
the church spoken on social matters in such an official and comprehensive
fashion.” Pope Benedict XVI recently added his contribution to the tradition of
social teachings with Caritas in veritate (Charity in Truth). Read up!
Today’s readings: Colossians 1:24-2:3; Luke 6:6-11
“Is it lawful
to do good on the Sabbath?

Feast of the
Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Great expectations
Disappointments come in all
varieties: in finance, romance, parenting, and professional fulfillment. Some
of us dream big dreams only to reap what seem humble returns. Should we set our
sights lower, then, to keep disappointment at bay? For his part Saint Paul does
recommend an attitude adjustment: Aim for love. Those who orient their actions
and intentions toward love of God will not be disappointed because God is glad
to employ all things, successes and failures together, to fulfill divine
purposes. Just ask Saints Joachim and Anne, aged parents of a late-arriving
child soon to be called “full of grace.”
Today’s readings: Micah 5:1-4a or Romans 8:28-30;
Matthew 1:1-16, 18-23 or 1:18-23
“We know that
all things work together for good for those who love God.”

Feast of Peter Claver, priest
No need to seek approval
The Spanish Jesuit priest Saint
Peter Claver spent 40 years ministering to African slaves arriving in the port
of Cartegena, in what is now Colombia. Many thought he was wasting his time and
even opposed his work with people whose welfare was almost entirely neglected.
In the last few years of his life, Peter himself was nearly forgotten, having
become ill and confined to his room. Yet his death in 1654 prodded the city
into the realization they had lost a saint. Even if your efforts to help others
go unnoticed—or if noticed, perhaps criticized—know it’s likely that the
beneficiaries of your assistance do realize what you’ve done, and that God
certainly does.
Today’s readings: Colossians 3:1-11; Luke 6:20-26
“Blessed are
you when people hate you, and when they exclude you . . . on account of the Son
of Man.”

You are what you wear
Clothing has a dual purpose: to
protect the fragile body from harsh weather and to adorn and identify ourselves
and what we are about: the business suit of an executive, the torn jeans of a
teenager, the uniform of a soldier. So it makes sense that Saint Paul says we
should “put on” virtue; we should wear compassion, kindness, patience,
gentleness—colorful and obvious as our outfits. Paul wants us to wear our
allegiance to Christ—“on our sleeves” if you will—not as a boast like a Gucci
or Prada logo, but as a simple, humble sign that this woman, this man, this
youngster belongs to Christ, and you’ll know it because you can see that she or
he is dressed in love.
Today’s readings: Colossians 3:12-17; Luke 6:27-38
“Above all,
clothe yourselves with love.”

Becoming like the teacher
Remember that frightening moment
when you first realized: “Oh, my gosh, I’m becoming my mother!”—or your father
or whoever it was staring back at you from the mirror of your life? We do tend
to grow up to become like our parents in many ways, whether we like it or not.
Perhaps an even more frightening realization is that someday our kids
will be saying the very same thing. We put a lot of time and effort into trying
to control our kids when, if the above is true, we ought to spend at least as
much energy controlling ourselves. That way, when the student becomes like the
teacher, we will have made some progress.
Today’s readings: Readings: 1 Timothy 1:1-2, 12-14;
Luke 6:39-42
“A disciple
is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully qualified will be like the
teacher.”

Feast of the
Most Holy Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary
A name you can trust
Dating back originally to the 16th
century, the feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary was reinstated on the Catholic
calendar in 2000 by Pope John Paul II. It celebrates the gift of Mary’s name
for when we are in need of a mother’s care. So in the Mass for this feast the
priest says: “Grant that we who call upon the holy name of Mary, our mother,
with confidence in her protection may receive strength and comfort in all our
needs.” Today keep the name of the Blessed Virgin on your lips, so as to be
prepared for the moment you are in need.
Today’s readings: 1 Timothy 1:15-17; Luke 6:43-49
“I will show
you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them.”
