OUR PARISH MISSION
STATEMENT
WE ARE THE CATHOLIC PARISH COMMUNITY OF ST. PHILIP
NERI, ANSWERING CHRIST’S CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP THROUGH WORD, SACRAMENT AND
SERVICE.
WE PROCLAIM GOD’S HOPE AND LOVE TO ALL.
From the Parish
Outreach Desk of:
Sister Patricia
Kelly, M.S.B.T.
So what are
we doing this coming Thursday, November 26th? The country will be celebrating Thanksgiving
Day! But what does that mean? Turkey Day – a day off from work – football
– yes. But what more could it
be?
According
to the Catholic Dictionary, the definition of Thanksgiving is: “expression of gratitude to God; one of the
four ends of prayer.” And according to
the Oxford American Dictionary, the definition of Thanksgiving is: “an expression of gratitude, especially to
God.” So both the Catholic Dictionary
and the secular Dictionary refer us to God, when we are in the area of giving
thanks.
Other,
related definitions of Thanksgiving, or giving thanks are: gratitude: “pleasure
in satisfaction of something;” thankful “conscious of a benefit
received.”
And so, for
this column, I wonder what we are thankful for in addition to Turkey Day; a day
off from work, and football….Are we thankful for
. Our
Catholic faith?
. Our
families?
. being
member of St. Philip Neri Parish?
. For God’s
love for us?
. For God’s
loving forgiveness?
. For the Gospel
call to service, stewardship,
justice, and the common good?
. For
living in America?
. For
opportunities to seek out those who are
Isolated; the elderly; the immigrant; the
poor –
and offer them the gift of our presence?
. For
Christ’s presence in the Eucharist?
. For
Adoration on the First Friday of each month?
. For
adequate food and nutrition?
. For our
good health?
. For
educational opportunities?
. For the
gift of life at all stages?
. For
friends and neighbors?
. For heat
in winter and air conditioning in the
summer?
. For
modern technology?
. For the
latest medical advances?
. For
Encyclicals and Pastoral Letters that give
us direction for deepening our spiritual
lives?
. For the
community – building social activities
at St. Philip Neri Parish?
. For our
Pastor?
. For our
Parish Staff who try to engage you in
ministry in the Parish?
. For
Parish benefactors?
These
eighteen questions just “scratch the surface” of things we may be thankful
for. How many more can you add?
This coming
Thursday, November 26th, Thanksgiving Day, let’s join one another in
giving thanks to our Triune God for opportunities to pray for and serve each
other.
I leave you
in the warmth of the Trinity.

PARISH NEWS
FROM THE PARISH OUTREACH OFFICE
Eli
Elizabeth Ministry is based on Mary’s visit to
her cousin Elizabeth (Luke: 39-55). With Jesus in her womb she hastened to
Elizabeth’s home so she could share her joy and awe at the power of God. Elizabeth’s pure and simple response must
have brought great comfort to her. The
Elizabeth Ministry hopes to support women in our parish who are expecting a
child or have recently given birth, too.
We seek to emulate Mary, our Mother, by sharing with other women in the
joys, challenges and sorrows of the childbearing years. If you or someone you know is expecting a
child or has given birth, please call us to share in your joy and receive
support in the challenges of motherhood.
We are willing listeners and can provide caring companionship, as Mary
offered to Elizabeth. Call the rectory
at: 215-679-9275 or LaRue Emmell at: 215-679-3086.
H.O.P.E.

young life I have lost a lot of people from cancer and had those who survived
it. Most recently, this year I have lost two people in my life from cancer, in
only 3 weeks of each other. Both of these people died at a young age, my cousin
Mat Gray of 42 and my god mother Joan Lowery would have been 48, she battled
different types of cancer for 12 years, from breast, lung, brain and back.
In order to help cure cancer I have decided to
be part of an organization called Movember. It fights against prostate cancer,
which 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with this cancer in their lifetime. The
funds raised go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Lance Armstrong
Foundation (LIVESTRONG). I’m doing this by growing a Moustache
this Movember, the month formerly known as November. To make a donation, you can either:
Go online to: http://us.movember.com/mospace/3205/ and donate online
using your credit card or Pay Pal account or by writing a check payable to
‘Movember Foundation’, referencing my Registration Number 3205
and mailing it to: Movember Foundation, PO Box 2726, Venice, CA 90294-2726. All
donations are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law. Thank-you for your
time and hope you can make a difference in the world by helping out a leading
source of peoples death!
Sincerely,
Daniel Bauer

U.S. House Keeps Abortion Funding Out of Health Care Reform
Tell Senators:
Follow the House’s Lead on Removing Abortion Funding
Protect Conscience Rights
Ensure Affordable Health Coverage
Allow Immigrants to Purchase Private Health Insurance
As long-time advocates of health care reform, the U.S. Catholic
bishops continue to make the moral case
for genuine health care reform that will protect the life,
dignity, consciences and health of all, especially
the poor and vulnerable.
· On
November 7, the U.S. House of Representatives passed major health care reform
that
reaffirms the essential, longstanding and widely supported policy
against using federal funds for
elective abortion coverage.
· It is
critical that the Senate adopt the House-approved Stupak Amendment language on
this
issue. This Amendment ensures that Americans are not forced to pay
for the destruction of
unborn children as part of needed health care reform.
· The Senate
must address other essential moral priorities: protecting conscience rights;
making
health coverage more affordable and accessible for those in need;
and ensuring that immigrants
do not lose or will not be denied health care coverage needed for
the good of their families and
the health of society.
ACTION: Contact Senate and House Members through e-mail, phone
calls or FAX letters.
· To send a
pre-written, instant e-mail to Congress go to www.usccb.org/action.
· Call the
U.S. Capitol switchboard at: 202-224-3121, or call your Members’ local offices.
Full
contact info can be found on Members’ web sites at www.house.gov
& www.senate.gov.
MESSAGE—SENATE:
“Please adopt the House-approved Stupak Amendment that upholds
longstanding policies
against abortion funding, and please protect conscience rights in
health care reform. Health care
must be made more affordable and accessible to those in need, and
immigrants must not lose or
be denied health care coverage.”
MESSAGE—HOUSE:
“I am pleased that the House-passed health care reform bill
maintains the longstanding policy
against federal funding of abortion. Please work to ensure that
this essential provision is included
in any final bill sent to the President.”
WHEN: The Senate schedule is uncertain. Act today! Thank you! For
more information on proposed legislation and the bishops’ position on authentic
health care reform, visit: www.usccb.org/healthcare.

Solemnity of
Our Lord Jesus Christ the King
Christ rules
The feast of Christ the King was
created by Pope Pius XI in 1925 to remind us that Jesus is the true king of all
creation and that he “must reign in our hearts, minds, wills, and bodies,” the
pope wrote. The transition time between the end of one liturgical year and the
beginning of another is a good time for reflection and preparation. In what
ways during the past year did you allow Christ to rule over your heart, mind,
will, and body? Next, write yourself a letter stating your spiritual intentions
for the coming year. Put it in a self-addressed, stamped envelope and give the
letter to someone to mail a few months from now. The mid-year reminder will do
you good.
Today’s readings: Daniel 7:13-14; Revelation 1:5-8; John 18:33b-37
“My kingdom
does not belong to this world.”

Feast of
Clement I, pope, martyr
All hands on deck
When it comes to early church
leaders, it doesn’t get much earlier than Clement I, who is believed to have
died around the year 100. We don’t know much about his life, but we do know he
was a prominent leader of the early church in Rome. Tradition has it that
Clement was martyred during a persecution by being tied to an anchor and thrown
overboard. Religious persecution of any kind is a social disease that must be
resisted at all costs. Become aware of the ways in which it is still with us
today and do your part to build a more tolerant environment for all to worship
as they choose.
Today’s readings: Daniel 1:1-6, 8-20;
Luke 21:1-4
“This poor
widow put in more than all of them.”

Feast of
Andrew Dung-Lac, priest, martyr, and companions, martyrs
Built with kindness
It is said that the Holy City of
God is built with the good deeds of the saints. When Andrew Dung-Lac was
growing up in Hanoi in the early 1800s, he and his poor Buddhist family were
cared for and fed by Christian missionaries. Despite unspeakable persecutions,
Andrew became a Christian and was eventually ordained a priest. He endured
horrible suffering but persevered until the emperor finally had him beheaded.
Even as his life was being torn down, the good deeds the missionaries did for
Andrew and his family sustained his faith and built up his hope. Isn’t it
amazing what a little kindness can do?
Today’s readings: Daniel 2:31-45;
Luke 21:5-11
“As for these
things that you see, the days will come when not one stone will be left upon
another.”

Feast of Catherine of Alexandria, virgin, martyr
Some can’t handle the truth, others die for it
Saint Catherine of Alexandria was
a woman to be reckoned with. Not only was she a scholar and skilled public
speaker, but she also was confident in her calling from God. Knowing full well
that this combination of gifts could get her in trouble, Catherine challenged
the Roman emperor himself for his unjust persecution of Christians during the
fourth century. Unable to disprove Catherine’s arguments or sway her from her
faith, the emperor had her killed. But the angry, senseless act of one person
could not put a stop to God’s continued activity through Catherine. To this day
she is still known as friend to all who call on her name. For what or whom
would you be willing to go out on a limb?
Today’s readings: Daniel 5:1-6, 13-14, 16-17, 23-28; Luke 21:12-19
“They will
arrest you and persecute you. . . . This will give you an opportunity to
testify.”

Thanksgiving
Day
As Providence would have it
As you sit down to your
Thanksgiving meal today, be sure to give thanks to President Abraham Lincoln,
and even more so to Sarah Josepha Hale. A prominent 19th-century journalist,
Hale campaigned tirelessly for a national Thanksgiving holiday. In the midst of
the Civil War and prompted by Hale’s editorials and letters, Lincoln called the
nation to pause in thanksgiving in 1863. His proclamation read in part: “The
year that is drawing towards its close has been filled with the blessings of
fruitful fields and healthful skies. . . . [Other blessings] have been added,
which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and
soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful
providence of Almighty God.”
Today’s readings: Daniel 6:12-28;
Luke 21:20-28
“Stand up and
raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

Verbal tattoos
To some folks it makes perfect
sense to have the name of a loved one indelibly inked on their flesh, inscribed
with a heart-and-arrow to demonstrate how permeated they are by the
relationship. But most of us don’t need to literally write words on our bodies
because words bond with our psyches most naturally. Still remember the names
you were known by on the playground? Recall the words of praise or blame
affixed to you by parents and teachers? How about adding to those indelible
memories some life-giving words from the Bible? Fall in love with a verse
today.
Today’s readings: Daniel 7:2-14;
Luke 21:29-33
“Heaven and
earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”

November 28
The beginning of the end
Jesus spoke of the end of time in
different ways, but his constant message was to keep watch. Be on the lookout
for him now, and you will be prepared when he comes again. In saying this, he
was not only counseling the avoidance of self-indulgence but also calling for a
good deal of freedom. Watchfulness means freeing yourself not only from your
sins but also from things such as worry that can be just as burdensome. Being
attuned to the ways you can invite Jesus into your life in every moment frees
you to love God and neighbor more fully—a love with which Christ will repay you
in the end.
Today’s readings: Daniel 7:15-27;
Luke 21:34-36
“Be alert at all times.”
