SCHOOL NEWS
Preschool
– We
read the story “Henry and Amy” in Math class.
The children learned to identify the position and directions of
objects. We arranged and described
objects in the classroom by position and direction.
Kindergarten – This week we shared
what we were thankful for and learned about the first Thanksgiving.
1st – We discussed the
first Thanksgiving and the life of the pilgrims. The students also learned how people, places and Thanksgiving
have changed over time.
2nd – The second grade has
been working on counting collections of coins in Math. They enjoyed playing Money Bingo.
3rd – This week the
students are researching tunnels and canals that are in our area. They will be creating tunnels and canals out
of paper towel rolls.
4th – We are becoming
sentence savvy! Students can write
complex sentences using clauses and conjunctions. We even learned a song about clauses.
5th – We are beginning to
start a new unit on energy.
6th – The students are
continuing their novel study on “Number the Stars”. They are creating a Power Point titled, “Who Wants to be a
Millionare.” It will be used as a
review for their Vocabulary test.
7th – We are reading Act
II of “A Christmas Carol.” In Social
Studies, we are looking forward to wrapping up our colonial times project next
Tuesday.
8th – The students in
grades 6-7-8 enjoyed their trip to Gettysburg last Thursday. The weather was brisk and windy, but the
students were still able to get out to, tour the battlefield. They even learned about the teamwork needed
to fire a cannon.
PARISH NEWS
FROM THE PARISH OUTREACH OFFICE
Elizabeth Ministry is based on Mary’s visit to
her cousin Elizabeth (Luke: 39-55). The Elizabeth Ministry hopes to support
women in our parish who are expecting a child or have recently given birth,
too. We seek to emulate Mary, our
Mother, by sharing with other women in the joys, challenges and sorrows of the
childbearing years. If you or someone
you know is expecting a child or has given birth, please call us to share in
your joy and receive support in the challenges of motherhood. We are willing listeners and can provide
caring companionship, as Mary offered to Elizabeth. Call the rectory at: 215-679-9275 or LaRue Emmell at:
215-679-3086.
Needed: A few good men-and women to become a Friendly
Visitor and/or a H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Enthusiastically) Volunteer. A

at the Parish Outreach Office: 215-679-2282.
If no answer, please speak slowly and leave your name and
number. Please say the number, twice.
MARTHA MINISTRY
Martha Ministry is an associate ministry of
Bereavement. The Martha Ministers are
representatives of St. Philip Neri Faith Community. They offer consolation and support to a bereaved family at the
time of loss of a loved one. Volunteers
(Martha Helpers) will offer food or dessert, if wanted. The Martha Minister will call/visit the
family (if they agree) and will attend the Funeral Mass as the Parish
Representative. Follow-up will
continue, as needed or wanted.
If interested in being a minister or helper,
please contact Kathy Talbot at: 215-541-0250 or Sister Patricia Kelly, M.S.B.T.

To
all cancer survivors and those who have been lost from cancer:
My name is Daniel Bauer and throughout my
young life I have lost a lot of people from cancer and had those who survived
it. Most recently, this year I have lost two people in my life from cancer, in
only 3 weeks of each other. Both of these people died at a young age, my cousin
Mat Gray of 42 and my god mother Joan Lowery would have been 48, she battled
different types of cancer for 12 years, from breast, lung, brain and back.
In order to help cure cancer I have decided to
be part of an organization called Movember. It fights against prostate cancer,
which 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with this cancer in their lifetime. The
funds raised go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Lance Armstrong
Foundation (LIVESTRONG). I’m doing this by growing a Moustache
this Movember, the month formerly known as November. To make a donation, you can either:
Go online to: http://us.movember.com/mospace/3205/ and donate online

NEWS
Office of the Cardinal
November 2009
Dear
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
During this
time of year, many of us will take a moment to reflect on God’s blessings in
our lives.
As I look
back on the past year, I am thankful for the tireless effort and generosity of
those who have supported Heritage of Faith – Vision of Hope. This historic effort, which began a little
more than 15 months ago, is enabling the Church of Philadelphia to respond to
the needs of its people now and in the future.
Through the
dedication and prayers of pastors, volunteers, and donors, over 21,000 families
already have made pledges and gifts totaling $110 million toward our goal of
$200 million. Many more parishes will
introduce this extraordinary endeavor in the coming months and this encourages
us that our goal will be met.
On behalf of
the people, parishes and programs that will benefit from your sacrificial
pledge, I extend my deep gratitude.
Sincerely in
Christ,
Cardinal

First Sunday
of Advent
It will work out in the end
If apocalyptic literature in the
Bible has not sparked trepidation over what may happen to our fragile planet
and our fragile selves, then certainly science fiction films and hokey TV
dramatizations of the “predictions” of Nostradamus will do it. Unlike such
shows, the early Advent imagery of the heavens and earth passing away are not
intended to scare us but rather to encourage us, to assure us that “when these
signs begin to happen,” whether inconsolable grief at a personal loss or some
cataclysm that shakes the whole planet, our redemption is secure. Your place in
the hands of God cannot be shaken.
Today’s readings: Jeremiah 33:14-16; 1 Thessalonians 3:12-4:2; Luke 21:25-28, 34-36
“Your
redemption is drawing near.”

Feast of
Andrew, apostle
He was in Scotland afore ye
For nearly 1,000 years Saint
Andrew, the “first called” of the apostles, has been Scotland’s patron saint,
and the Saltire or “Saint Andrew’s Cross,” an X-shaped cross—which Andrew is
said to have been martyred on—is represented on the nation’s flag. Traditions
abound as to how exactly Scotland’s special connection with Andrew came about.
One claims the saint’s relics were brought from Constantinople to Scotland
under divine guidance. Another says that during a battle with the English the
Scottish king saw a cloud shaped like a Saltire and declared that Andrew was
watching over his troops. Whatever the case, rest assured today is a big day
for the Scottish—and for all of us who wish to imitate Andrew and follow Jesus
in our own lives.
Today’s readings: Romans 10:9-18; Matthew 4:18-22
“Immediately
they left their nets and followed him.”

All has been revealed
Christians are pretty lucky in a
way, because we really believe we have what we need to know. God is not holding
back some important piece of information. It’s there for all to see and
understand. “Religious truths,” the Second Vatican Council’s document on
revelation said, “. . . can be known by all men with ease, with solid certitude.”
And one form of revelation, scripture, the council said, “must be acknowledged
as teaching solidly, faithfully, and without error that truth which God wanted
put into sacred writings for the sake of salvation.” That means we have what we
need to know, and we can know it, and we can trust it. All we
have to do is make the effort.
Today’s readings: Isaiah 11:1-10;
Luke 10:21-24
“Blessed are
the eyes that see what you see!”

Working for your supper
The story of the multiplication of
the loaves and fish is surely the best known of the miracle stories of Jesus.
It’s the only such story recorded in all four gospels. In each of the synoptic
gospels Jesus puts the disciples to work. First they have to find some food,
then Jesus blesses it, then they distribute it to the crowd. This seemingly
insignificant detail reminds us of a very important but often forgotten fact:
We are co-creators with God, and we must help answer our own prayer. What
prayer are you waiting on today? What might you do to help bring it about?
Today’s readings: Isaiah 25:6-10a;
Matthew 15:29-37
“He took the
seven loaves and the fish; and after giving thanks he broke them and gave them
to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.”

Feast of
Francis Xavier, priest
Dress to impress
One of the founding members of the
Jesuits, Saint Francis Xavier (1506-1552) is considered to have been one of the
greatest missionaries since the apostles. Appointed to re-evangelize portions
of the Far East, Francis placed himself with the lowest castes, preaching to
the sick and dying at hospitals and orphans and slaves in the street. He
understood that, were the fire of Christianity to spread through the East, the
kindling must begin at the base of society. Rather than arriving like a royal
ambassador, Francis clothed himself with rags and made his home in the lowliest
shelters. His example shows us how humble appearances can be the greatest tool
for bringing the message of Christ to others.
Today’s readings: Isaiah 26:1-6;
Matthew 7:21, 24-27
“The lofty
city he lays low. . . . The foot tramples it, the feet of the poor, the steps
of the needy.”

Feast of John
of Damascus, priest, doctor of the church
The pirates of God
A wise old monk was captured by
Arab pirates during a raid on Sicily. He was carried off to Damascus where he
was made a teacher. One of his students was John, our saint of the day. Even in
the Islamic world of eighth-century Syria, John secretly learned his Christian faith
from the old monk. The young man eventually became a priest and a doctor of the
church. Like the blind men whose sightless path providentially crossed that of
Jesus, Saint John and the church ultimately benefited from a pirate raid,
demonstrating once again that God makes all things work together for good.
Today’s readings: Isaiah 29:17-24;
Matthew
9:27-31
“As Jesus
went on from there, two blind men followed him, crying loudly, ‘Have mercy on
us, Son of David!’ ”

The kingdom has you covered
As Jesus sent out the 12 apostles
after empowering them to proclaim God’s kingdom and heal the sick, he
admonished them not to charge for their services: “You received without
payment; give without payment.” As the nation struggles with difficult
questions of health-care coverage, government assistance, Medicare, private
insurance, and the like, it is good to take a step back from the heat of the
debate and look at larger principles. While it may not be possible today to
offer health care to all without cost, we do well to remember that for Jesus
such care was a way of proclaiming and reflecting the kingdom of God.
Today’s readings: Isaiah 30:19-21, 23-26; Matthew 9:35-10:1, 5a, 6-8
“Jesus . . . gave them authority .
. . to cure every disease and every sickness.”
