OUR PARISH MISSION
STATEMENT
WE ARE THE CATHOLIC PARISH COMMUNITY OF ST. PHILIP
NERI, ANSWERING CHRIST’S CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP THROUGH WORD, SACRAMENT AND
SERVICE.
WE PROCLAIM GOD’S HOPE AND LOVE TO ALL.
LET US PRAISE
CHRIST TOGETHER
I finally have returned to my office in the
rectory. During the Christmas Holidays,
it is mostly a place where I don’t spend a great deal of time. There is so much else to do around the
parish, school and Church. My office
and the kitchen are still piled high with good wishes, cards, cookies and gifts
from you all. I most sincerely thank
you!
We begin a new year and the papers on my desk and
my calendar which overwhelms me speak of a busy year to come and an active
spring hopefully around the corner.
There will be the regular everyday happenings and many major Events her
at St. Philip Neri.
Along with the in-between not so big, and not so
small activities. Lent will be here in
a short six weeks or so. Easter then
will not be too far behind. This Lent
we again will gather for another Parish Mission/Retreat. Father Miniscalco will be with us from the
St. John Neumann Shrine located at St. Peter the Apostle Church in
Philadelphia. We are in the planning
stages for this Spiritual activity. The
outdoor Stations of the Cross still wait to be formally blessed; we will invite
the Bishop for this. Carnival in the
Spring, many, many Events in between.
Pastoral Council will be implementing revised By-Laws and set-up. So much more, I could go on and on. Like all of you, I take one day at a
time. That is what our God wants us to
do. Experience Him in every Event,
everyday, each day on its own.
Thank you all for being present with me in this
Journey with me. We are a Parish Family
living in and with God and one another moving from day to day in His love.
PS: (Thank
you so very much for the generous Christmas collection; many bills are paid
because of your commitment and generosity).
Praise Be Jesus Christ…Now and Forever!

SCHOOL NEWS
Pre-K – We celebrated the
season of Winter. Everyone shared the
fun and exciting activities they like to do in winter. The children dressed paper dolls in
appropriate winter attire. We ended the
week by making bird feeders for our feathered friends.
Kindergarten – This week we
started talking about winter. We
discussed the weather, what we wear, and some fun things we like to do during
this season.
1st – We started our third
reader, and we read a play this week.
We also learned about symmetry in Math.
2nd – The children are
preparing to make their First Reconciliation (Confession). They will also be starting to learn how to
write in cursive.
3rd – We are starting off
the New Year writing in cursive. We
will write in cursive in all subjects.
In Math, we are starting multiplication.
4th – Students are able to create and interpret various graphs to
solve problems. We have discussed the
importance of graphs in problem solving.
5th – We began our new
year by revisiting our hopes and dreams for this school year. We are also learning about the parts of the
Mass and its importance in our lives.
6th – The students are
finishing Unit 2 in ILA. They finished
their novel study before the Christmas break.
They will return to short stories.
7th – We are learning

exploring how the expansion of the railroads into the western frontier changed
the cultural geography of America.

WELCOME COMMITTEE
NEW MEMBERS NEEDED!
If you
haven’t been born and raised in the area, you know how you felt when you first
moved into the parish. You don’t know
anyone. Did you know that St. Philip
Neri Church has a Welcome Committee?
Did you know that we contact new parishioners soon after they register
in the parish and tell them all about the parish, its activities and groups
within the Parish. Our parish is
growing; so our Welcome Committee is growing.
We need a few good men or women, or couples to contact these new
families – the more the merrier! We
meet four (4) times a year to find way to improve our approach to new
families. Can we count on you? For more
information, please contact Joan Lampart at 215-529-5686 or email to jmlampart@verizon.net
(please put SPN Welcome Committee on the Subject Line so I
will know it is from a parishioner.)

THANK YOU FROM
BIRGHRIGHT
Dear Father
Roncase,
Please
thank all your parishioners for their generous donations (a truck load) to help
our Mothers and babies, born and pre-born.
We could
not be here to speak for life and to offer real assistance without the
generosity of God’s people who give to us.
There is
real need in the area we serve – a baby may be born as a direct result of your
help to his/her Mother!
Gratefully,
Betty Ann
Daily,
Director
FROM THE PARISH OUTREACH OFFICE
Elizabeth Ministry is based on Mary’s visit to
her cousin Elizabeth (Luke: 39-55). With Jesus in her womb she hastened to
Elizabeth’s home so she could share her joy and awe at the power of God. Elizabeth’s pure and simple response must
have brought great comfort to her.
The Elizabeth Ministry hopes to support women
in our parish who are expecting a child or have recently given birth, too. We seek to emulate Mary, our Mother, by
sharing with other women in the joys, challenges and sorrows of the
childbearing years. If you or someone
you know is expecting a child or has given birth, please call us to share in
your joy and receive support in the challenges of motherhood. We are willing listeners and can provide
caring companionship, as Mary offered to Elizabeth.
Call the rectory at (215)679-9275 or LaRue
Emmell at (215)679-3086.
Needed: A few good men and women to become a
Friendly Visitor and/or a H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Enthusiastically)

Sister Patricia Kelly, M.S.B.T. at the Parish Outreach Office:
215-679-2282. If no answer, please
speak slowly and leave your name and number.
Please say the number, twice.
Another THANK YOU from Catholic Social Services
(C.S.S.):
For those
of you who took a C.S.S. “Ornament” from the Tree of Love, and returned the
gifts on time, THANK YOU! The families
were greatly pleased with their gifts.
C.S.S. Staff are greatly pleased with your loving generosity. THANK YOU.
Your reward will be a hundred-fold because God cannot be outdone in
generosity.

Feast of the
Baptism of the Lord
Know how loved you are
If you go to church often enough,
you’re so used to hearing about God’s love that the words can sound a little
threadbare. So let’s focus on what it means to be the beloved of God.
God would do anything for you: If there’s a crucifix handy, consider how this
image underscores what God means by “anything.” When love this immense comes
into your life, you want to respond in a big way, too, as our baptism reminds
us. As the annual National Vocation Awareness Week begins, spend a few minutes
each day reflecting on how you’re invited to share in God’s “big love.”
Today’s readings: Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7;
Acts
10:34-38; Luke 3:15-16, 21-22
“You are my
Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

Can you hear me now?
The telecommunications industry
would have us believe that the most important connections we make are via
computer and cell phone. While it’s true that these devices are useful in
today’s world, there remains the crucial connection with that still, small
voice within our own hearts that no computer can reach. That voice, which is
God’s, can only be heard in stillness: in the bare branches of trees against a
clear blue winter sky, the quiet of new-fallen snow, the starry brilliance in a
winter night sky, our breathing in and breathing out. What is God calling you
to do now? Spend some time today just listening.
Today’s readings: 1 Samuel 1:1-8;
Mark 1:14-20
“And Jesus
said to them, ‘Follow me.’ ”

Call waiting
National Vocation Awareness Week
began with the celebration of the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which marks
Jesus’ initiation into public ministry. There are many ways to serve God, many
vocational paths. Pray for men and women in your parish and diocese who are
discerning their vocation and encourage them. You might also send a card to a
priest or consecrated person this week, thanking them for their ministry to you
and the church. Then take a step further and live out your own call as fully as
you can.
Today’s readings: 1 Samuel 1:9-20;
Mark 1:21-28
“The people
were astonished at his teaching.”

January 13
Did you hear a voice?
Very often a person professing
vows as a member of a religious community will choose the story of Samuel in
the temple as the first reading for the service. In tried-and-true storytelling
fashion, three times young Samuel mistakes the voice of God for that of his
mentor, Eli. After the third time the elder recognizes that persistent voice
and tells the boy that the next time he hears it he must answer, “Here I am,
Lord. Speak, your servant is listening.” That’s the response of anyone open to
the “still, small voice” that is God’s, so easily drowned out, so easily
misunderstood. In the middle of Vocation Awareness Week we remember that vocation
means a “call,” and God’s call is not addressed only to beginners. The road is
long, and if we’ve chosen that narrow path with Christ, we need continual
course-correction, continual attention to that voice and awareness that today’s
journey must be guided by God alone.
Today’s readings: 1 Samuel 3:1-10, 19-20; Mark 1:29-39
“Then Eli
perceived that the Lord was calling the boy.”

Bad examples
The two sons of Eli, Hophni and
Phinehas, were the trusted priests of the ancient temple in Shiloh. But they
were dipping into the collection, tapping the till, so to speak. That’s why the
army of Israel got hammered by the Philistines, and Hophni and Phinehas got
theirs. Not only that, but the Philistines took the ark of God captive. Now
what will Israel do? Don’t worry, they get it back. And it’s a great story. It
should inspire us to pray for vocations, men and women to serve the Lord in
truth and integrity.
Today’s readings: 1 Samuel 4:1-11;
Mark 1:40-45
“The ark of
God was captured; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.”

Get going
There’s a lot in life that can get
us down. Sometimes things of our own making, and sometimes, well, it’s life.
It’s not always easy to know what to do. We can stand still and try to figure
it out, or we can try to backtrack to see what happened. At some point,
however, it is time to move—to step out of what happened and to imagine
something new. There’s no magic trick to moving on, and there’s no
one-size-fits-all solution. But there is one thing we can do: Begin.
Today’s readings: 1 Samuel 8:4-7, 10-22a; Mark 2:1-12
“Stand up and
take your mat and walk.”

Let religious freedom ring
On January 16, 1786 Thomas
Jefferson signed the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom—the basis
for the religion clauses in the U.S. Constitution that prohibit Congress from
making laws that establish religion or prevent its free exercise. Catholics are
among the many religious groups to have benefitted from Jefferson’s “wall of
separation between church and state.” In the 19th and 20th centuries Catholics
were able to establish churches, schools, and hospitals free from the
persecution they faced in other parts of the world. In addition they were not
forced to follow the devotional practices of other faiths when they entered a
public classroom or courthouse. Jesus showed a tolerance and respect for all he
encountered. May we continue to do the same as a church and nation.
Today’s readings: 1 Samuel 9:1-4, 17-19; 10:1a; Mark 2:13-17
“Many tax
collectors and sinners sat with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many
who followed him.”
