OUR PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

WE ARE THE CATHOLIC PARISH COMMUNITY OF ST. PHILIP NERI, ANSWERING CHRIST’S CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP THROUGH WORD, SACRAMENT AND SERVICE.

WE PROCLAIM GOD’S HOPE AND LOVE TO ALL.

FROM THE PARISH OUTREACH OFFICE DESK OF SISTER PATRICIA KELLY, M.S.B.T.

Did you know that the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace approves a book published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (U.S.C.C.B.) called Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church?

The Compendium is divided into three parts.  Part I is called God’s Plan of Love for Humanity; Part II – The Family; the Vital Cell of Society; Part III – Social Doctrine and Ecclesial Action.  In the second section of Part III, it discusses “Social Doctrine and the Commitment of the Lay Faithful”.  Excerpts from that section follows:

The presence of the laity in social life is characterized by service; the sign and expression of love, which is seen in the areas of the family, culture, work, economics, and politics according to specific aspects.  Complying with the different demands of their particular area of work, lay men and women express the truth of their faith and, at the same time, the truth of the Church’s social doctrine which fully becomes a reality when it is lived concretely in order to resolve social problems.  In fact, the credibility of this social doctrine comes more immediately from the witness of action than from its internal consistency or logic.

The Compendium outlines the areas of service that the laity are called to, and explains each one.  The areas are:  Service to the human person, Service in Culture, Service in the Economy, Service in Politics.

I will address some of these service areas in future columns.

SCHOOL NEWS

Preschool – The students were led to be grateful for God’s gift of water.  We thanked Jesus for saving us through the water of Baptism.  The children talked about the many ways water serves us.  We studied about the ocean and made ocean bottles for the children to bring home.

Kindergarten – This week Kindergarten continued learning about winter and the animals during the season.  We made our own bird feeders out of pine cones, peanut butter, and birdseed.  Then we hung them at home and observed what happened.

1st – In Science we are learning about our five senses.  We will also start a new unit in Math on telling time.

2nd – Most mornings we take 5 minutes to look at a particular word sound.  We call this “Phonics 5.”  The children create words or use the dictionary to find them and are invited to write them on a white board.

3rd – In Social Studies, students have been working on an invention project.  They are researching an invention and realizing the importance of that invention.  Students have also been reading about inventor such as Thomas Edison, the Wright Brothers and Alexander Graham Bell.

4th – We’ve discussed different types of prayer.  In small groups, students will write a prayer of thanks, sorrow, prayer and petition.

5th – The students are beginning their study of electricity.  They are making electromagnets, static electricity and comparing the importance of conductors and insulators.

6th – The class is busy preparing their science fair projects and exploring the amazing cell and how it works to keep everything alive and functioning.

7th – Seventh grade has started reading The Outsiders.  In Social Studies, we are writing about the Boston Massacre from the point of view of a colonist.

8th – In Social Studies the 8th grade is entering the 20th century.  We will be focusing on the advances of the American Industrial Revolution and how these developments changed the role of the United States in the world.

SAINT PHILIP NERI BIBLE STUDY

Do you know about the Gospel of Matthew?

Not much is known about Matthew.  Also called “Levi,” he was a tax collector before answering Jesus’ call to discipleship.  Like many tax collectors of the time, he may also have been a scribe.  Matthew once held a feast for Jesus and was later chosen by Jesus to be one of his twelve apostles.

The Parish Bible Study group invites you to 24 weeks of study of Matthew’s writings.  The program will be broken into 3- 8 week sessions.  Study materials will be available.

Each week we will watch a video on a specific lesson, discuss the portions of Matthew’s Gospel that apply.  Through the discussion we will have a better understanding of what Matthew’s message means to us.  This study is part of The Great Adventure series.

You will have two opportunities to join us – Monday evenings or Friday mornings.

First evening class is Monday, February 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the Rectory meeting room.

First morning class is Friday, February 5 at 9:00 a.m. in the Rectory meeting room.

The cost for study materials is $35.00.  Checks should be made payable to St. Philip Neri Church.   To register, contact Joan Lampart, 215-529-5686 or email jmlampart@verizon.net asap. (please put Bible Study on subject line).

ARCHDIOCESAN NEWS

Office of the Cardinal

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Isaiah the Prophet heard the Lord’s voice saying, “Whom shall I send?  Who will go for us? “Isaiah responded, “Here I am, send me.”  The apostles followed the Lord’s call and were sent to invite others into the Lord’s Vineyard.  Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”  The Lord’s promise to Isaiah, to the apostles, to Pete and to all of us has been fulfilled in the ministry of the priests who have served our Archdiocese so faithfully.

Many of the priests who responded to the Lord’s call and labored in the vineyard are now retired and some are physically ill.  They are being wonderfully cared for at the Villa Saint Joseph, Regina Coeli Residence, Saint Francis Country House, and a number of other Catholic Health Care facilities throughout our Archdiocese.  Their care and welfare, so well deserved after serving the Lord generously through the years, is the responsibility of us all.  I thank God for the goodness and generosity of the faithful in the past and in this Year of the Priest, seek your assistance to ensure that our elderly priests are well cared for now and in the future.

Once again, I call upon your commitment to these faithful servants through our Annual Collection for the Care of Aging and Infirm Priests of Philadelphia.  The collection will be taken up in all parishes throughout the Archdiocese on the weekend of February 6th and 7th.  I ask your generous financial support and your continued love and prayers for all our retired and infirm priests who in their own way are still responding to God’s call to serve his holy people through their priestly ministry of prayer, suffering and selfless love.

Sincerely in Christ,

Justin Cardinal Rigali

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Put your list away

Humans are afflicted with the desire to make lists, to categorize, to arrange according to significance—and we especially like to assign importance, particularly among people. But we never see the whole picture, so how can we know who is more important, or which ability or action has the greatest potential for good? In Middlemarch George Eliot reminds us: “. . . . For the growing good of the world is partly dependent upon un-historic acts, and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life and rest in unvisited tombs.” We are all part of the Body of Christ; we are all necessary and important. Take a break from judging today.

Today’s readings: Nehemiah 8:2-4a, 5-6, 8-10; 1 Corinthians 12:12-30 or 12:12-14, 27; Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21

“Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?”

Monday, January 25
Feast of the Conversion of Paul, apostle

Down but not out

The life of Saint Paul is a study in contrasts. He went from being a respected Jewish teacher with the power to haul Christians to jail, to a blind man lying in the dust, to a great apostle of the one whose followers he had hunted down. The force of his conversion echoed the violence he had used against the followers of Christ: A flash from the sky threw him to the ground and blinded him; he didn’t eat or drink for days. When he recovered and began to preach the gospel of Jesus, some Christians could not believe one of their worst enemies had become a brother in Christ. Paul’s encounter with the risen Jesus laid upon him the “obligation,” as he put it, to bring Christ’s message to the world. How does your life, with all of its contrasts, proclaim your faith in Jesus?

Today’s readings: Acts 22:3-16 or 9:1-22; Mark 16:15-18

“He is an instrument whom I have chosen to bring my name before Gentiles and kings and before the people of Israel.”

Tuesday, January 26
Feast of Timothy and Titus, bishops

With a little help from your friends

We can infer from Saint Paul’s letters more about his fellow missionaries, Timothy and Titus, than we can about any of the original 12 apostles. Of Titus we know that his friendship with Paul was so deep that Paul’s imprisonment was eased by Titus’ comfort. How important friendship is, and how frequently neglected or misunderstood. In his book Friendship historian and theologian Martin Marty repeats this sentence often: “We have friends, or we are friends, in order that we do not get killed.” With each repetition, he points to what threatens to kill us, ranging from anger, poverty, violence, or starvation to loneliness, ignorance, illness, or neglect. How lovely if, after a saint’s name, one might read not only “bishop,” “apostle,” or “martyr” but also “friend.”

Today’s readings: 2 Timothy 1:1-8 or Titus 1:1-5; Mark 3:31-35

“To Titus, my loyal child in the faith we share.”

Wednesday, January 27
Feast of Angela Merici, virgin

Support your local family

Saint Angela (1474-1540) was a big believer in the strength of women, the importance of family, and the need for adequate religious instruction. From an early age her goal was to support women in their vocations as mothers, daughters, and Christians. She eventually founded several schools in northern Italy to instruct young girls in Catholic theology and Christian living, and formed the Society of St. Ursula, dedicated to providing women of little social status with a sense of their dignity and a faith-filled purpose. Among her instructions: “Live and behave in such a way that your daughters will mirror themselves in you. And what you want them to do, do it yourself first.” Good advice for all parents, guardians, and mentors of children.

Today’s readings: 2 Samuel 7:4-17; Mark 4:1-20

“And some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit.”

Thursday, January 28

Feast of Thomas Aquinas, priest, doctor of the church

No question about it

Saint Thomas Aquinas intended his Summa Theologica to represent, as the title says, a “summary” of Christian theology. Seeing that this summary stretches to more than 3,000 pages, we would have trouble imagining what he left out. His attention to questions of faith is so thorough that he even devotes time to the issue of whether our resurrected glorified bodies will be agile (he concludes they will). What are some of the “odder” questions you have about the Catholic faith? Find the answers.

Today’s readings: 2 Samuel 7:18-19, 24-29; Mark 4:21-25

“For there is nothing hidden, except to be disclosed; nor is anything secret, except to come to light.”

Friday, January 29

You’ve got to start somewhere

Every year the CNN television network sponsors a program recognizing “everyday people changing the world.” On Thanksgiving Day the top ten “CNN Heroes” are honored in a televised event. What is striking in each story is the extent to which one “small” person, like the mustard seed in the gospel parable, really can make a huge difference for the good. The nomination categories suggest ways each of us can make a positive difference: “championing children,” “community crusaders,” “defending the planet,” “medical marvels,” “protecting the powerless,” and “young wonders.”

Today’s readings: 2 Samuel 11:1-4a, 5-10a, 13-17; Mark 4:26-34

“It is like a mustard seed . . . the smallest of all the seeds on earth.”

Saturday, January 30

Riding out the storm

The sea regularly serves as a metaphor for life. No one wants to go through “rough waters,” and who doesn’t prefer “smooth sailing”? As we all know, however, the voyage of a lifetime has stretches when stress, fear, depression, loss, or disaster rock your boat. In the Gospel of Mark Jesus calms the wind not once but twice. In both cases a gale was making life difficult for the disciples on the lake, and both times the miracles showed Jesus’ power over chaos and the capacity of faith to overcome fear. We can’t avoid stormy seas, but we can trust in the One to whom the wind and water answer.

Today’s readings: 2 Samuel 12:1-7a, 10-17; Mark 4:35-41

“Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
