OUR PARISH MISSION
STATEMENT
WE ARE THE CATHOLIC PARISH COMMUNITY OF ST. PHILIP
NERI, ANSWERING CHRIST’S CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP THROUGH WORD, SACRAMENT AND
SERVICE.
WE PROCLAIM GOD’S HOPE AND LOVE TO ALL.
Ask deacon mike
I have spoken many times to you about my
feelings for having the opportunity to serve as a Deacon in the Catholic Church
and especially here at St. Philip Neri.
Hopefully, you have come to know through individual conversations with
me, comments that I have made during my homilies, my writings here in “Ask
Deacon Mike” and most hopefully through my actions how much joy and fulfillment
I experience as a Deacon. But in the
end, it is neither about me nor how I feel.
It is always about serving Our Lord by serving His Church. For me, the primary expression of “Church”
is the people. As God’s children we
come together as one body to express this wonderful relationship with God and
each other. I am privileged to be
called to promote and assist you in responding to these relationships.
My purpose for mentioning this again is to
highlight the results of a survey on the Permanent Diaconate in the United
States that was taken in late 2009 and published in March 2010. I don’t want to bore you with a bunch of
statistics. But I do want to use some
of the findings of the survey to help you understand my joy and pride in being
a Deacon. I most importantly wish to highlight and emphasize what a great
blessing the Order of Deacon is to the Church.
I also must point out that this blessing is bestowed upon us as a Church
not so much by the action and personality of the Deacons but by providence and
the grace of God. It is this expression
of God’s love and care for us that I give thanks.
In 2009 there were approximately 225 Permanent Deacons in the
Archdiocese of Philadelphia. This
amounted to 1 deacon to 6482 Catholics.
While I don’t know exactly how many Catholics are registered in our
parish I would think this ratio is pretty close to our situation here. At the present time we have a little over
1800 families registered in our parish.
While Philadelphia is by far one of the largest Arch/dioceses in the US
it ranks 15th on the list of total Permanent Deacons. Most of the Archdioceses higher on the list
had much smaller Catholic populations than Philadelphia. Based on the
extrapolated data it is estimated that there are 16,349 Permanent Deacons actively serving in the United
States. This number reflects Deacons
serving in every diocese of the country in numerous ministries. Over 85% of those Deacons are incardinated
in the Arch/diocese in which they serve.
This means that they belong by Church Law to the Arch/diocese where they
serve. For the first six years of my
assignment here at St. Philip Neri I was not incardinated in the Archdiocese of
Philadelphia. I still belonged to the
Church of Columbus, OH where I was ordained.
I was given faculties to serve here by Cardinal Bevilacqua and later
sought and was granted incardination from Cardinal Rigali.
Ninety-two percent of the Permanent Deacons in
the United States are married men of varying ages: < 1% age 35 – 39, 9% age 40 – 49, 29% age 50 – 59, 38% age 60 – 69 (I fall into this
category) and 24% > age 70. A
statistic that rather surprised me was that nearly 81% of all Permanent Deacons
in the United States are white / Caucasians.
Two percent are Black or African-American and 14% are Hispanic. The remaining Deacons are Asians – 2% and
Native American – 1%. The educational
level of Deacons is 61% with at least an undergrad degree.
For the most part Permanent Deacons are not
financially compensated. Only 18%
receive compensation in areas of ministry that includes: hospitals, parish administration, prisons,
parish non-ministerial services, parish ministerial positions, diocesan
services and other social service areas.
However, this only gives a glimpse of the varied areas of ministry in
which Deacons serve. For my part I
assist our pastor in many projects and programs. I assist at or preside over
various liturgical functions, lead a wonderful team of faith-filled people who
conduct our RCIA, provide counseling and spiritual direction, coordinate the
activities of our liturgical ministers and help our school by consulting with
families having difficulties with tuition.
Like all of the men whom this survey represents, I am very blessed to be
part of the ministry of the Church.
As I reflect on all of this I know that what
Deacons do is only a small part of the total ministry of the Church. Under the authority of our local bishop we
assist our priests in many ways. But we
must never forget that while some are called to ordained ministry all of us are called to care for
one another. Both men and women should
always realize that the same Spirit Who worked in Jesus works in each of
us. It is the call of every Christian
to lead lives that answer Christ’s call to feed His lambs and sheep.
If you have any comments or questions about
our Catholic faith, the Church or sacraments please let me know. You can send me your inquiries by dropping
them in the collection basket or sending them to the rectory. You can also send me an e-mail at deaconmikefranks@verizon.net. Your
identity will not be revealed.
This past weekend we celebrated Memorial Day
and the beginning of the summer season.
I hope you find some time for family and friends while saving a few
minutes of the day for yourself to relax, pray and think about your relationship
with Jesus. Wherever you may go don’t
forget to attend Mass. Have a great
summer and as always I love you all.

6, 2010 Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and
Blood of Christ
God meets all needs
Human need doesn’t get much more
basic than food and drink. But our hunger and thirst go beyond the physical. We
also have essential spiritual requirements: We hunger and thirst for God. To
our eternal good fortune, God satisfies all of our needs through the Body and
Blood of Jesus. The sacrament of the Eucharist is a living reminder that God is
with us and provides us with abundance where there was scarcity; presence where
there was absence; life where the shadow of death once fell. It sounds like a
miracle, and it is. What more do we need?
Today’s readings: Genesis 14:18-20;
1 Corinthians
11:23-26; Luke 9:11b-17
“All ate and
were filled.”

Spoken like a true prophet
Mountains appear in religious
symbolism across cultures and epochs, including in key prophetic moments in
Hebrew and Christian scripture. The mountain image also figured heavily in the
famous “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech in which Rev. Martin Luther King
Jr. foreshadowed his death the night before his assassination: “[God] has
allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the
Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight
that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land.” Keep believing the
promises in your own life!
Today’s readings: 1 Kings 17:1-6; Matthew 5:1-12
“When Jesus
saw the crowds, he went up the mountain.”

Be worth your salt
Jesus calls us “salt of the
earth”—but how are we salty? Three ways: sweat, tears, and blood. When we work
up a sweat physically or mentally, we’re expending energy for another. Salty
tears come with compassion or when we’re caught up in others’ irresistible
laughter. The salt of blood is passion: abandoning yourself to someone you
believe in—sacrificing yourself for another. Jesus warns against losing our
flavor and becoming bland. It happens. We can suffer from “compassion fatigue.”
That’s where prayer comes in. It will help restore your zest for life.
Today’s readings: 1 Kings 17:7-16;
Matthew 5:13-16
“You are the
salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be
restored?”

Feast of
Ephrem, deacon, doctor of the church
Sing a new song
The next time you feel inspired by
the hymns sung at Mass, give a special prayer of thanks to Saint Ephrem (b.
306). Ephrem, a deacon in the Syrian church, was one of the first to introduce
song into Christian worship as a way to instruct people in the faith and
counter heresies that were being promoted through song. Ephrem added his own
orthodox lyrics to the heretics’ popular tunes. The result was hundreds of
hymns filled with rich images drawn from Christian scripture and tradition.
Ephrem hoped his poetry and songs would strengthen and protect Christians
against those who would go against the gospel. Honor the noble birth of
Christian hymns by singing out on Sunday.
Today’s readings: 1 Kings 18:20-39; Matthew 5:17-19
“Whoever
obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of
heaven.”

Taking chances for God
Faith is a risky business. From
the cross of Jesus to the church’s most recent martyr, God-lovers have laid
their lives on the line for what they believe. The prophet Elijah stuck his
neck out regularly, promising things only God could deliver. During a long
drought he tells the king he hears the sound of heavy rains falling. But what
he surely hears is his own heart beating hard and fast, hoping the rain clouds
are really on their way! At first there’s nothing. But Elijah remains firm. We,
too, must believe in the God of the “seen and unseen,” as we pray in the Creed.
Today’s readings: 1 Kings 18:41-46; Matthew 5:20-26
“Elijah said
to his servant, ‘Go up now, look towards the sea.’ He went up and looked, and
said, ‘There is nothing.’ ”

Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus
Worth the pain
We know what it’s like to experience
heartache over a sick child, a broken relationship, or when the wheels come off
our best intentions. Today’s celebration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
celebrates God’s experience of the very same thing in his Son, Jesus Christ.
The human heart on fire with love yet tortured by thorns is the perfect image
of how we feel when life goes wrong for us and the people we love. It’s also
how God feels when his beloved world and the people he adores fail to embrace
the sublime fulfillment, the eternal joy God desires to share.
Today’s readings: Ezekiel 34:11-16;
Romans
5:5b-11; Luke 15:3-7
“There will
be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine
righteous persons who need no repentance.”

Feast of the
Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary
A change of heart
Devotion to the Heart of Mary has
a long history. It was popular but without much official recognition until the
20th century, when in 1917 it is said the Virgin Mary appeared to three
children in Fatima, Portugal and told them: “God wishes to establish in the
world a devotion to my Immaculate Heart.” Twenty-five years later, on Dec. 8,
1942, Pope Pius XII dedicated the church and the human race to the Immaculate
Heart of Mary. The beauty and depth of Mary’s heart are surely the most
profound mysteries of the universe. What would change if you were to devote
yourself to her Immaculate Heart?
Today’s readings: 1 Kings 19:19-21;
Luke 2:41-51
“His mother
treasured all these things in her heart.”
