OUR PARISH MISSION
STATEMENT
WE ARE THE CATHOLIC PARISH COMMUNITY OF ST. PHILIP
NERI, ANSWERING CHRIST’S CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP THROUGH WORD, SACRAMENT AND
SERVICE.
WE PROCLAIM GOD’S HOPE AND LOVE TO ALL.
The
Stations of the Cross
In addition to today being Independence Day, we are also celebrating the
visit of our Cardinal Archbishop to our parish. Cardinal Justin Rigali is with us today to celebrate the 11:00 AM
Mass. Afterwards, His Eminence will
bless our new outdoor Stations of the Cross.
As you may know, our local Knights of Columbus council cleared the woods
behind the church and erected the Stations.
Each Station was paid for by individual parishioners and families. This beautiful wooded area is the perfect
place to spend some time in solitude meditating on the wonderful gift which
Christ gave us when He allowed Himself to be tortured and crucified for the
salvation of the world. Therefore, I
would like to devote this issue of Ask Deacon Mike to sharing with you a brief
history of this popular devotion.
Much of the following is taken from www.communityofhopeinc.com.
The Stations of the
Cross, also called The Way of the Cross, is a devotion to the passion of Christ
consisting of prayers and meditations on fourteen occurrences that were
experienced by Christ on His way to the crucifixion. During the time of the
crusades (1095-1270), it became popular for pilgrims in the Holy Land to walk
in the footsteps of Jesus to Calvary. After the Moslems recaptured the Holy
Land pilgrimages were too dangerous. As a result, the Stations of the Cross
became a popular substitute pilgrimage throughout Europe. The Stations
represented critical events from Scripture or tradition of Jesus' journey to
Calvary. Originally done only outdoors, the Stations were allowed inside
churches in the mid-18th century. Eventually fixed at fourteen, the Stations
soon became a familiar feature in all Catholic churches. The devotion may be
conducted personally by the faithful, making their way from one station to
another and saying the prayers, or by having an officiating celebrant move from
cross to cross while the faithful make the responses. The stations themselves
must consist of, at the very least, fourteen wooden crosses, pictures alone do
not suffice, and they must be blessed by someone with the authority to erect
stations. Our beautiful new stations
certainly meet this requirement.
The devotion
originated in the late 4th century when pilgrims flocked to the Holy Land from
all parts of the world to visit the land of Jesus. Heading the list of places
they visited was the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, which had been built by the
Emperor Constantine in 335 AD atop Calvary and the tomb of Jesus.
Processions of
pilgrims to this church were common. Egeria, a woman from Gaul who traveled to
the Holy Land in the 4th century, recalls in her diary how she joined
Christians from all parts of the Roman world walking westward on Holy Thursday
from the garden of Gethsemane to the church of the Holy Sepulcher, where they
celebrated Jesus' death and resurrection.
Christian pilgrims
contributed to the development in Europe of the Stations of the Cross in its
present form. Returning from the Holy Land, they brought oil from the lamps
that burned around Jesus' tomb, soil and relics from the holy places. More
important, they brought memories of the liturgies, devotions, and shrines they
experienced. Soon, churches and shrines were being built throughout Europe
modeled on the pilgrim sites, and Jerusalem's devotions and liturgies
influenced the liturgical and religious life of western Christians.
The Moslem conquest of
Palestine in the 7th century contributed to the building of replicas of the
holy places in Europe, as Christians, finding access to the holy places more
difficult, sought places of pilgrimage nearer home. If they could not go to
Jerusalem, they would have reminders of Jerusalem close by.
For most of us the
practice of this devotion occurs during Lent.
But, with our new outdoor Stations of the Cross we have the opportunity
to pray and meditate on Christ’s passion and death at any time of the year. We often focus on Jesus as the Son of God
and the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity.
Praying the Stations gives us the opportunity to unite our human
suffering with the very real human suffering of Jesus.
If you have any
questions concerning the Church, sacraments or parish life please contact me
and I will address them here. As always
your identity will be kept anonymous.
You can place your question in the collection basket or send it to the
rectory. Just be sure to address the
envelope to Ask Deacon Mike. You can
also contact me by e-mail at deaconmikefranks@verizon.net.
I would like to
express my appreciation to our Knights and the other workers who made this
project possible and to our parishioners who contributed to purchase the
Stations and benches. I wish you all a
happy 4th of July and as always, I love you all. Deacon Mike Franks

YOUTH MINISTRY
Thanks
is hardly enough to express our sincere gratitude for the prayers, support, and
financial contributions that our parish made for our trip to Steubenville. This
weekend was even deeper than last year and the twenty of us felt God's love in
such a deeper way. We will be going back next year for sure, and hope to
multiply the number of teens. Every teen who went were touched so deeply. This
is what some of them said after:
"I
don't think I can put the wonder and love I experienced this weekend into a
sentence! My soul jumped for joy at the sight of Him in the blessed Sacrament.
I love Jesus. It was so great to experience God in a new location. This retreat
put my faith back fully into my life. God needs more me time. I can't not pray
after Steubenville. The weekend inspired me." They go on, and we will be
sharing them in the next few weeks. God bless these teens, and God bless all of
the parishioners of St. Philip Neri Parish. THANK YOU!

ARCHDIOCESAN NEWS
Dear
Brothers and Sisters,
In
his most recent encyclical Caritas in veritate (Charity in Truth), Pope
Benedict XVI reiterated what he calls an important truth set forth by his
predecessor Pope Paul VI in his encyclical Populorum Progressio (On the Development
of Peoples): “…the whole Church, in all her being and acting – when she
proclaims, when she celebrates, when she performs works of charity – is engaged
in promoting human development.” Our Holy Father goes on to say that “…integral
human development is primarily a vocation, and therefore it involves a free assumption
of responsibility in solidarity on the part of everyone.” For nearly 40 years,
the Catholic Campaign for Human Development has concretely demonstrated the Catholic
Church’s solidarity with the poor in our country by funding local community
organizations that promote integral human development. These groups actively
engage the poor to participate in organized efforts that address the root
causes of poverty. Access to affordable housing and health care, quality education
for children, and vocational training for the unemployed are among the goals of
funded organizations. Each year the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops
sponsors a nationwide collection in support of the Catholic Church’s
longstanding efforts to reduce poverty by addressing its root causes. In the
Archdiocese of Philadelphia, the annual collection will take place on the
weekend of July 10-11, 2010. Funds
collected support anti-poverty projects across the country and in the
communities and neighborhoods of our own region, providing the means for our
less fortunate brothers and sisters to become agents of their own progress and
human development. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia exercises due diligence in
carefully reviewing all applications for grants from community organizations in
our region, ensuring that the mission and goals of prospective grant recipients
are consistent with the Catholic Church’s social and moral teaching. The
activities of funded organizations are closely monitored for ongoing compliance.
Nearly 40 million Americans are now living in poverty, and in these challenging
economic times that have adversely impacted so many people, the effect on the
poor is even more dramatic. Through your contribution to the Catholic Campaign
for Human Development, you assist your neighbors near and far in breaking the
cycle of poverty and achieving the dignity of self-reliance in their pursuit of
a better future. On their behalf, I express my appreciation and ask God’s
blessing upon you for your generous response to this appeal.
Sincerely
in Christ, Justin Cardinal Rigali

Independence Day
Declare to share
In early July of 1776, at the time
of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams wrote of the importance of the
moment to his wife Abigail: “It ought to be commemorated as the day of
deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized
with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and
illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time
forward forever more.” Despite our problems and challenges as a nation, we can
give thanks today for the many blessings we enjoy. And we can commit ourselves
to doing our part so that all who reside in our land can share in those
blessings.
Today’s readings: Isaiah 66:10-14c; Galatians 6:14-18; Luke 10:1-12, 17-20 or 10:1-9
“The harvest
is plentiful, but the laborers are few.”

Feast of
Anthony Mary Zaccaria, priest
Log on to Jesus’ chat room
Anthony Zaccaria (1502-1539), an
Italian priest and devoted admirer of Saint Paul, founded three religious
orders: one for men, one for women, and one for married couples. His letters,
of which only 11 remain, are warm, deeply spiritual, and very human. In his
second letter, for example, he laments the irresoluteness and indecisiveness
that renders him incapable of making any progress—a conundrum we can surely all
appreciate! Throughout his writings, in a variety of ways and for all problems
and difficulties, he offers this counsel: Ask Jesus for help. “Enter into a
conversation with Jesus as familiarly as you would with me . . . chat with him
and ask his advice.” We ought to do the same.
Today’s readings: Hosea 2:16, 17b-18, 21-22; Matthew 9:18-26
“ ‘Your faith
has made you well.’ ”

Don’t close your eyes
Years ago teenage driver education
students were forced to watch an instructional film describing the “I.P.D.E.”
method of driving safely. “I.P.D.E.” stood for identify, predict,
decide, and execute. Of course some high-schoolers in their
inimitable way restated the meaning as identify, pursue, destroy,
and escape. How you perceive things affects what you decide to do. If
you see with the eyes of faith, all people become children of God and every
situation becomes an opportunity to seek the good of others. Close the eyes of
faith and you sink into the darkness of self-centeredness. The best
instructions to follow: Keep your eyes on God.
Today’s readings: Hosea 8:4-7, 11-13; Matthew 9:32-38
“They made
kings, but not through me; they set up princes, but without my knowledge.”

Offer the present
Perhaps you have heard the phrase
“pie in the sky when you die,” usually uttered in disdain as a critique of
Christianity’s supposed exclusive focus on the hereafter. Jesus, however, was
clear on this point—his message to his disciples was unequivocal: “The kingdom
of heaven is at hand.” That is a present-tense description; the kingdom is here
and now, not there and then. Jesus’ message has profound implications for
Christians and for the entire church: We have a mission to the world, to make a
difference for good here and now. Start small; what acts of goodness, generosity,
and forgiveness can you offer today that will help make the kingdom present for
someone else?
Today’s readings: Hosea 10:1-3, 7-8, 12; Matthew 10:1-7
“As you go,
proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ ”

Peace is a choice
We all want peace. But how we hope
to get peace is a different matter. Some expect it to drop from heaven
at some future time. Others are convinced we must fight for the right to it.
Pope Benedict XVI made a direct pitch for peace at the start of the New Year
when he declared: “I want to appeal to the consciences of those who are part of
any kind of armed group. To each and every one I say: Stop, reflect, and
abandon the path of violence.” You and I may not recognize that we, too, go
into each day “armed” for conflict. Try laying down your defenses today.
Today’s readings: Hosea 11:1-4, 8c-9; Matthew 10:7-15
“For I am God
and no mortal, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come in wrath.”

Feast of
Augustine Zhao Rong, priest, martyr, and companions, martyrs
Catholicism can be subversive
If you’re visiting China, you will
soon discover that there are two Catholic Churches: the real one and the
“official” one. The second is the up-front one you can see. It’s sanctioned by
the government. The real one is the one you can’t see. It’s an illegal,
underground community with hidden clergy and clandestine sacraments. The
Chinese government sees Christianity as culturally subversive, which of course
it is. That’s why when Zhao Rong was baptized and ordained a priest in the 19th
century, he was among a group of 120 Catholics arrested and executed for
criminal activity. Sometimes real Catholicism puts you at odds with your
society and your government. Can you accept that?
Today’s readings: Hosea 14:2-10;
Matthew
10:16-23
“You will be
dragged before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them.”

Pick me!
“Here I am; send me!” Think about
these two simple yet powerful statements of Isaiah. “Here I am” is a
recognition that I am present. I am someone. I matter. Further, it is a
recognition of the unique talents, personality, creativity, and spirit that God
has blessed me with. “Send me!”: I am a fully capable person who can influence
the world through the gifts I’ve been given, gifts that are not for me alone
but in turn to give to others. “Send me!” is a readiness to be surprised by
God, trusting that the unknown future will be brought to good by God. Spend
time with these words and let them echo in your heart throughout the day.
Today’s readings: Isaiah 6:1-8;
Matthew
10:24-33
“Then I heard
the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And
I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’ ”
