Nineteenth
Sunday in Ordinary Time
’Tis a gift
With so much emphasis on work and
consumption in American culture, it is easy to fall into the trap of believing
that “you are what you earn.” This attitude creates a lot of anxiety, leaving
us constantly worried about our financial worth and feeling devalued if our
“earning power” drops or if we are not part of the wage economy. Jesus offers a
different vision when he assures us that God is pleased to give
us the kingdom. There is nothing to earn here, nothing to be gained, nothing to
be lost. Our self-worth is a freely given gift of our Creator. Bank on it!
Today’s readings: Wisdom 18:6-9; Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19 or 11:1-2, 8-12; Luke 12:32-48 or
12:35-40
“Do not be
afraid . . . for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.”

Feast of
Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, virgin, martyr
Change your course?
Ezekiel’s career as a prophet
started with full-blown atmospheric effects: “As I looked, a stormy wind came
out of the north: a great cloud with brightness around it and fire flashing
forth continually.” If you don’t think something big is going to happen after
that, you should have your pulse checked. Drastic changes also played a role in
the life of Saint Teresa Benedicta, also known as Edith Stein. Raised in a
devout Jewish family, she gave up her faith as a young woman. She studied with
the philosopher Edmund Husserl only to leave her academic career to become a
Carmelite sister. The last drama in her life was also the most tragic: her
death in a Nazi concentration camp. Be open to what God is calling you to, even
if it means going in a very different direction.
Today’s readings: Ezekiel 1:2-5, 24-28c; Matthew 17:22-27
“The word of
the Lord came to the priest Ezekiel . . . and the hand of the Lord was on him
there.”

Feast of
Lawrence, deacon, martyr
Dare to care
Saint Lawrence—patron of
comedians, butchers, and roasters—will ever be remembered for his legendary
last words to his executioners, “this side’s done, turn me over and have a
bite,” as he lay martyred on a red-hot gridiron. He showed compassion, courage,
and challenging righteousness, too. Lawrence was a deacon charged with the care
of the poor in Rome, people whom he loved deeply. So when the prefect of Rome
demanded that he hand over the church’s treasure, Lawrence ushered in the poor,
the lame, and the blind. In this Lawrence showed himself most like his Lord
who, if he favored anyone in life it was those who had no one to depend upon
but God. It’s charming to be remembered for one’s wit, especially if it’s
accompanied by courage and compassion.
Today’s readings: 2 Corinthians 9:6-10; John 12:24-26
“He scatters
abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.”
Wednesday,
August 11
Feast of
Clare, virgin
Give thanks for others
At the age of 18, Saint Clare
(1193-1253) was inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi to leave her life of luxury
and give herself to God. She and her sisters in the Order of Poor Ladies (Poor
Clares) lived in complete poverty, depending solely on the generosity of others
for their sustenance. Clare was by all accounts a remarkable woman. Yet she
could not have lived her chosen life alone. Her years of poverty and prayer
were made possible by the surrounding community. The role and significance of
community often go underappreciated in our individualistic culture. Take some
time today to notice and appreciate the communities of which you are a part.
Today’s readings: Ezekiel 9:1-7; 10:18-22; Matthew 18:15-20
“For where
two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.”

August 12
Feast of Jane
Frances de Chantal, religious
The best method for receiving the Spirit
At various times in her life Saint
Jane Frances de Chantal was a wife, a mother, and a nun. In each of these roles
she lived with compassion and trust in God as well as with a spirit of
leadership and vision. That doesn’t mean life was easy for her. She survived
the deaths of her husband, son, spiritual mentor, and other dear ones. She
endured despair, the plague in France, and opposition from some officials to
her religious community’s non-cloistered, ministerial way of life. Prayer was
her strength. Take to heart Jane’s wisdom: “The great method of prayer is to
have none. If in going to prayer one can form in oneself a pure capacity for
receiving the spirit of God, that will suffice for all method.”
Today’s readings: Ezekiel 12:1-12; Matthew 18:21-19:1
“In their
sight you shall lift the baggage on your shoulder, and carry it out in the
dark.”
Friday,
August 13
Feast of
Pontian, pope, martyr, and Hippolytus, priest, martyr
Cats and dogs unite
In the heated doctrinal debates of
the third century, today’s dynamic duo of saints was locked in a theological
steel-cage death match. They were at it so much that Emperor Maximinus got sick
of it and exiled them both to Sardinia. There, realizing they shared the same
fate of torture and starvation, they decided to bury the hatchet. Before their
martyrdom in about 236 they forgave each other and reconciled. One thing all
Christians have in common, despite any differences, is forgiveness and
reconciliation. That’s nothing to argue about.
Today’s readings: Ezekiel 16:1-15, 60, 63 or 16:59-63; Matthew 19:3-12
“I will
establish my covenant with you, and you shall know that I am the Lord . . .
when I forgive you all that you have done.”

Let them come to me
Because of Jesus’ reputation for
holiness, people brought children to him for his blessing. Children—nearly
powerless—were especially in need of Jesus’ prayer and touch. Christ welcomed
these opportunities, but he also saw in them a chance to teach the adults
around him. The kingdom of God, he said, has a special place for children
because they are vulnerable and must receive what they need as a gift. And so
are all the “little ones”: the lowly, helpless, sick, poor, and excluded of
every age. These least have the first place in the kingdom. Do you welcome them
as privileged guests? Do you feel welcome?
Today’s readings: Ezekiel 18:1-10, 13b, 30-32; Matthew 19:13-15
“It is to
such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.”
