OUR PARISH MISSION
STATEMENT
WE ARE THE CATHOLIC PARISH COMMUNITY OF ST. PHILIP
NERI, ANSWERING CHRIST’S CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP THROUGH WORD, SACRAMENT AND
SERVICE.
WE PROCLAIM GOD’S HOPE AND LOVE TO ALL.
From the Parish
Outreach Desk of:
Sister Patricia
Kelly, M.S.B.T.
Service in
Politics is the last area of service to which the lay
faithful are called, according to The Compendium of the Social Doctrine of
the Church by the Pontifical Council for Justice.
Service in Politics: Part I
The lay
faithful are called to identify steps to be taken in concrete, political
situations in order to put into practice the principals and values proper to
life in society. This calls for a
method of discernment around the principles of: knowledge of the situations, analyzed with the help of the
social sciences and other appropriate tools; systematic reflection on these
realities…in light of the Gospel and the Church’s social teaching;
identification of choices ensuring that the situation will resolve positively…(In
short knowledge, systematic reflections and choice identification)
Many people
today believe that the democratic system is agnostic and relativistic. This leads to the belief that truth is
something determined by the majority, and conditioned by political
considerations. In such circumstances,
discernment is particularly demanding…It is also demanding in dealing with
realities that involve…more duties such as the sacredness of life, the
indissolubility of marriage, the promotion of the family founded on marriage
between a man and a woman.
When
legislative or political choices, contrary to Christian principles, are
proposed or made, the Magisterium teaches that a well-formed Christian
conscience does not permit one to vote for a political program or individual
law which contradicts the fundamental contents of faith and morals. In such cases where it is not possible…to
block or abrogate such laws, the Magisterium teaches that a representative
whose personal, absolute opposition to these programs or laws is clear and
known to all, may legitimately support proposals aimed at limiting the damage
caused by them, and at diminishing their negative effects on the level of
culture and public morality…
Faced with
the many situations involving fundamental and indispensable moral duties, it
must be remembered that Christian witness is to be considered a fundamental
obligation that can even lead to the sacrificing of one’s life; to martyrdom in
the name of love and human dignity. The
history of the last twenty centuries, as well as that of the last century, is
filled with martyrs for Christian truth, witness to the faith, hope and love
founded on the Gospel. Martyrdom is the
witness of one who has been personally conformed to Jesus crucified, expressed
in the supreme form of shedding one’s blood according to the teaching of the
Gospel: “a grain of wheat falls into
the earth and dies…it bears much fruit”
I leave you
in the warmth of the Trinity.

Xaverian
Missionaries
Mission
Cooperative Collection
We welcome, Father Carl Chudy who has been
assigned to speak on behalf of the Mission Cooperative at St. Philip Neri, next
weekend. The second collection will
take place immediately after the first collection.
About the
Xaverian Missionaries:
Whenever the Xaverian Missionaries have been able to build a church or a
seminary, a school or a hospital (often with their own hands), it has been
because of the help given to us by our fellow Christians here in the states,
who have made a special commitment to aiding the foreign missions: these co-missionaries
are the ones who make possible the training of future native priests, brothers
and sisters in the missions, who furnish the medicines and very often the
training so necessary for missions work.
Ultimately, our purpose is to create an atmosphere of Christian love: an
atmosphere that encourages those among whom we work to live the two great
commandments of love for the one true God and love of neighbor. (at the same time, the Xaverians provide the
opportunity for the native themselves to take their spiritual and material
destinies into their own hands.)
You too can SHARE in these mission
efforts through your prayers, through your financial aid and through
encouraging your young men and women to answer their call to be
missionaries. Thank you for supporting
through our missionary activities, the MISSION OF THE CHURCH. Through them you form, together with us, The
Xaverian Family.
Some give by going to the Missions, Some
go by giving to the Missions, without both, there are NO MISSIONS.
Give a St. Philip
Neri Memorial Gift!
For a
donation of $35 or more, there is a beautiful folder recording the gift and
donor to be presented to the family. A
Mass is offered each month.
In memory
of Beverly Latshaw, requested by:
Tom &
Mary Lewandowski, Richard & Marianne Kolb.
We also
have “Living Memorials” for those
special occasions in life.

the coming weeks.
ADULT
ALTAR SERVERS
We are in need of men and women to assist us as adult altar servers. Adult servers assist at funerals and holyday Masses. Over the past several years we have enjoyed
the help of a group of wonderful and dedicated men and women who have
selflessly offered their service at the altar.
Their presence has enriched many funeral liturgies and holyday Masses. Unfortunately the number of our adult
servers has diminished. As a result we
are in need of additional men and women to fill the ranks. If you would like to become an adult server
please call the rectory at (215) 679-9275 and leave your name and phone
number. Deacon Mike will contact you.

granola or fruit bars, fruit chews, hot or cold cereal packets (individual),
raisins, peanut butter crackers, applesauce and pudding, hot tea or coffee
packets, and juice boxes. Aid for friends helps serve the needy elderly. We
could use parishioner help in donating items that we would pack and deliver to
Aid for Friends. The youth will make
the bags up, make up some cards for them. If you would like to put your
donation into the basket in the vestibule, “Aid for Friends”, we would most

Sunday in Ordinary Time
Earn what you deserve
A teacher asked his class for
examples of words that describe the current crop of college students. He
expected to hear “highly educated” or “sophisticated” but was surprised at the
honesty of a young woman who responded “entitlement. We think everything is
owed to us.” An overstatement, yet such an attitude can often be attached to a
particular social class, race, gender, ethnicity, or nationality. I may grow up
believing I am owed good things in life because I am white, or black, because I
am a woman, or an American, or a Catholic. But scripture makes it clear that
simply being a member of a chosen race or having rank upon rank of noble
ancestors makes no impression on God. Only one thing does: goodness.
Today’s readings: Isaiah 66:18-21;
Hebrews
12:5-7, 11-13; Luke 13:22-30
“I will send
survivors to the nations . . . and they shall declare my glory among the
nations.”

Feast of Rose
of Lima, virgin
Homegrown virtues
Good living doesn’t have to come
with a lot of pious packaging. In 1671 Isabel de Flores (also known as Rose)
became the first named saint of the Americas. She earned this honor quite
simply, without martyrdom, founding an order, ruling a kingdom, or leading an
army. Hungering to join the Dominicans, who didn’t have a convent in her native
Peru, she established a hut in her garden and lived out her vows there. None of
us needs to stand on ceremony to embrace a holy way. Become a saint in your own
backyard!
Today’s readings: 2 Thessalonians 1:1-5, 11-12; Matthew 23:13-22
“We always
pray for you, asking that our God will . . . fulfill by his power every good
resolve and work of faith.”

Feast of
Bartholomew, apostle
Oh, what a kidder!
You know how you’ll sometimes kid
somebody by saying something about them that is exactly the opposite of what
they are? Like someone who is tall might have the nickname “Shorty.” Or you
might say to someone who is calm, “Don’t get so excited.” Jesus and Nathanael
(surnamed Bartholomew) exchange such quips. Nathanael makes a “Nazareth joke,”
and Jesus replies with an “Israelite joke.” So, the two men of the gospel story
are attracted by their mutual sense of humor. This looks like the beginning of
a beautiful friendship.
Today’s readings: Revelation 21:9b-14;
John 1:45-51
“When Jesus
saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, ‘Here is truly an Israelite in
whom there is no deceit!’ ”

Feast of
Joseph Calasanz, priest
Spread the wealth of learning
Do poor children deserve the same
educational opportunities that children of more prosperous families enjoy?
Saint Joseph of Calasanz thought so. But in the 16th century this idea was
deemed radical and presumed to lead to social unrest. If the poor received an
education, what would they want next? Joseph was ahead of his time in many
ways; his friendship with Galileo caused scandal as well. And he was right on
the merits of learning altogether. If educating the poor threatens social
stability, just see what happens when people remain in ignorance.
Today’s readings: 2 Thessalonians 3:6-10, 16-18; Matthew 23:27-32
“The grace of
our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you.”

Time to wake up
Jesus regularly admonished his
followers to stay awake. But how can we stay awake when we don’t know if we’re
asleep? One way to know for sure that we are asleep is when we believe we are
right and therefore everyone else must be wrong. When we cannot hear or even
imagine another’s point of view, we are asleep. On the other hand, when we
place our certainty alongside the possibility that we might be wrong, we are
awake. An open mind—toward our partner, child, mother-in-law, boss, or
non-Christian neighbor—is a sure sign that we are awake. Give some thought
today to whatever you are certain you are right about. Have you fallen asleep?
Today’s readings: 1 Corinthians 1:1-9; Matthew 24:42-51
“Keep awake
therefore.”

Rise and shine!
The theme of being awake continues
from yesterday’s gospel reading to today’s. Poet Antonio Machado wrote that all
of Jesus’ directives come down to one simple command: “Wake up!” Consider how
much of our daily routine involves sleepwalking through a series of familiar
habits. How easy for us to grow numb to the sufferings and injustices others endure,
whether from illness, prejudice, violence, or another social ill, when we are
only half awake to them. What can we do to stay alert? Involvement in the lives
of others, religious and devotional practices, a commitment to be part of the
solution, all have their place. As does keeping in mind that life is too
precious to be slept through!
Today’s readings: 1 Corinthians 1:17-25; Matthew 25:1-13
“Keep awake
therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”

Feast of
Augustine, bishop, doctor of the church
Something’s brewing
Saint Augustine of Hippo is
well-known in Western Christianity for his great contributions as a
philosopher, theologian, and bishop. It’s easy to understand why he’s known as
the “Doctor of Grace,” but did you know he’s also the patron saint of brewers?
Prior to channeling his energy and gifts into serving God, this earthy saint
was known for his wild living and fondness for beer. As he moved toward a more
moderate way of life, he still struggled with his more profligate side. He
famously said: “God, grant me chastity and continence—but not just yet.” What
helps you temper your more indulgent side? How can you channel this energy for
good?
Today’s readings: 1 Corinthians 1:26-31; Matthew 25:14-30
“Consider your own call, brothers
and sisters.”
