SCHOOL NEWS
Through our thoughts and actions, we strive to
respect all God has given us. We recognize and accept each others
unique qualities and talents. St.
Philip Neri Elementary School is accepting 2011-2012 School Year
Registrations. Any questions,
please contact the school office at: 215.679.7481.
Pre-School: This week the children
enjoyed making Turkeys for their Thanksgiving table. We compared the First
Thanksgiving to Thanksgiving today. In Language Arts, we studied the letter
ÒHÓ. In Math we graphed the different hair colors and heights of the children.
In Religion we learned about St. Francis Cabrini.
Pre-School
PM: We
had so much fun with our Science experiment this week! We learned about the
different properties of water. We took two solid ice cubes, one yellow and one
blue, and melted them into a green liquid for the letter ÒGÓ. In Art we painted
with gold and green glitter paint. We are continuing our Thanksgiving
celebration by making Indian corn.
Kindergarten: This week
we learned about the First Thanksgiving. We watched a video showing where the
Pilgrims lived, what they wore, and how they made all their food. The class
also compared their lives to the Pilgrim children. What a difference!
Grade 1: The First Grade
students have been learning about Thanksgiving; they also created a classroom
Bulletin Board with all the things they are thankful for. We hope everyone has
a Happy Thanksgiving!
Grade 2: On VeteranÕs Day
the children learned who veterans are and what special service they have
rendered to help insure our countryÕs safety and freedom. To honor these people
the students were invited beforehand to fill out a star for any veteran their
family has known with the veteranÕs name, relationship to student, branch of
service and whether they are now living or deceased. They shared that
information with the class and each star was hung up for all to see and to
serve as a reminder to pray for them this month.
Grade 3: Third Grade
loved getting their fingers messy digging in dirt. They were examining it with
magnifying glasses and were very excited when they found something moving
inside! We will return the animals to their true homes at the end of the week.
Grade 4: To compliment
our classroom learning about the settlement of Pennsylvania, we are traveling
to Pennsbury Manor; we will tour William PennÕs summer home and learn about
life in colonial times.
Grades 5 & 6: Father
Roncase is coming to school to say Mass for the 5th, 6th
and 2nd graders in the Chapel. Wow, only one week until Bishop
McIntyre comes to confirm the 6th and 7th graders. In
Social Studies the children made posters all about British Isles. They are
excited to give and listen to the Presentations.
Grade 7: The children are
investigating the properties of diffusion, osmosis, and photosynthesis. They
watched how water moves and saw how this can change vegetables in different
solutions.
Grade 8: In Math, they
are working on their ÒLiving in the Real WorldÓ Project. Each student selected
a job and a salary out of the Òcareer jarÓ and based on that information has to
determine their net pay and then find an apartment, finance a car, and plan a
budget. This is truly a real world awakening for the students!

Archdiocese
of Philadelphia
Office
of the Archbishop
My
brother priests and deacons,
My
brother and sisters of the lay faithful,
Next Sunday, the First Sunday of
Advent, is an historic occasion for Catholics throughout the United States.
After forty-some years, we will celebrate the Mass with a revised English
translation. This is a translation of the 2002 third edition of the Roman Missal and the fruit of many years
of intense work to provide a more faithful rendering of the Latin prayers into
English. Here in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, we have prepared for more
than two years to receive this new translation focusing not only on new words but on the Mystery the Liturgy celebrates, the Mystery of
the Death and Resurrection of Jesus.
The use of this revised English
translation gives us – clergy and the faithful – many new opportunities
to reconsider the centrality of the Mass in our lives, to learn more about our
Faith from the Mass prayers, to evaluate our preparation and our manner of
celebration. These are on-going opportunities that each of us, over the months
and years ahead, must take seriously so that our celebration of the Eucharist
will be more fully directed to the glory of the Triune God and to our growth in
holiness of life.
The next few weeks will require careful
attention as we sing and say new responses and prayers, and there may be some
awkwardness and confusion. However, it a short time there will be again an ease to our participation in the celebration of Mass with
the new translation. I encourage the use of worship aids and even some
instruction at Mass for a reasonable and smooth transition. Even though the new
texts will be in use, providing catechesis and information on the translation
must also continue.
I hope that this historic event, the
use of a revised English translation of the Roman
Missal, will also signal a renewed commitment to the Sunday Eucharist, to
celebrate it with greater beauty and dignity and to live from it more
profoundly and intently.
May God give you peace and every blessing.
Sincerely
yours in Christ,
Most Rev.

2011 DAY OF
SANCTIFICATION
For Priests of the
Archdiocese of Philadelphia
The priests
of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia assemble each year for a day of prayer and
reflection on the Sacred Priesthood. This year our priests will gather with
Archbishop Chaput at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary on Monday, November 21st
for the 2011 Day of Sanctification for Priests. Please
pray for all priests of the Archdiocese, especially this weekend and Monday,
with the following prayer from the Roman
Missal.
Lord our God,
You guide your people by the ministry of priests.
Keep them faithful in obedient service to you,
that by their
life and ministry,
they may bring
you glory in Christ.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Invest just five minutes a day, and
your faith will deepen and grow—a day at a time.

Solemnity of
Our Lord Jesus Christ the King
The least shall lead
The Feast of
Christ the King reminds us that leadership rests in JesusÕ example of serving,
calling us to be in solidarity with and care for the most vulnerable. In a 1999
address Pope John Paul II said: ÒThere are many criteria for assessing the
health of a particular society . . . . Yet the prime
criterion is how that society treats those who are the weakest and most
vulnerable, and ultimately it is on this basis that society will be judged.Ó
How would you rate our society in terms of its treatment of the weak and
vulnerable? What are you doing to ensure the care and comfort the gospel
demands?
TodayÕs readings: Ezekiel 34:11-12, 15-17; 1 Corinthians 15:20-26,
28;
Matthew 25:31-46 (160)
ÒI myself
will give them rest, says the Lord God.Ó

Feast of the
Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Presenting Mary
TodayÕs feast
takes us back to literature that never made it into the official canon of
scripture but was influential in the early church. According to these
apocryphal texts, MaryÕs parents Joachim and Anne, who had been childless,
brought Mary in thanksgiving as a young child to the Temple in Jerusalem where
she was consecrated to God. She remained in the Temple to be educated in
preparation for her role as Mother of God. We do not have to believe that
events actually unfolded in that way to grasp the truth that Mary played an
extraordinary role in the salvation story, and we can only marvel at her courage
in being willing to see her role through to completion. Are we prepared to do
the same?
TodayÕs readings: Daniel 1:1-6, 8-20;
Luke 21:1-4
(503)
ÒThis poor
widow put in more than all the rest.Ó
Tuesday,
November 22
Feast of
Cecilia, virgin, martyr
Time for a song
If youÕre
reading this, so far this year youÕve survived two apocalyptic predictions. One
fellow was so sure that Judgment Day was May 21 that he persuaded others to
quit their jobs and paper the country with warnings.
The other messenger, channeling an alleged ancient spirit, predicted that an
earthquake on June 15 would devastate the West Coast. Some continue to root for
the Mayan calendar, suggesting that we will run out of time on 12-21-12. But
many of us will put our trust in Jesus, who said the day cannot
be known. On the feast of the patron saint of music, weÕd rather sing a song
than whistle in the dark.
TodayÕs readings: Daniel 2:31-45;
Luke 21:5-11
(504)
ÒMany will
come in my name, saying, ÔI am he,Õ and ÔThe time has
come.Õ Do not follow them!Ó
Wednesday,
November 23
Feast of
Blessed Miguel Agust’n Pro, priest, martyr
Play your part
If being
Christian were a crime, would there be enough evidence to convict you? There
was enough to convict Father Miguel Pro, a newly ordained Jesuit priest in
Mexico during anti-Catholic persecution in the mid-1920s. He often Òdisguised
himself as a beggar to baptize infants, bless marriages, and celebrate Mass. He
would appear in jail dressed as a police officer to bring Holy Viaticum to
condemned Catholics,Ó one account says, and took up collections for the poor in
fashionable neighborhoods dressed as a businessman. Captured and facing a
firing squad, like Christ he forgave his executioners. Jesus foresaw
persecution and advised, ÒBe shrewd as serpents and simple as doves.Ó Miguel
Pro did whatever it took to bring Christ to those who needed him. What a little
creativity could do for our own daily evangelizing!
TodayÕs readings: Daniel 5:1-6, 13-14, 16-17, 23-28; Luke 21:12-19
(505)
ÒThey will
seize and persecute you . . . . and
they will put some of you to death.Ó
Thursday,
November 24
Feast of Andrew
Dung-Lac, priest, martyr, and companions, martyrs; Thanksgiving Day
Live strong
In her book The
Sense of Wonder Rachel Carson writes that as we age, we need an antidote
against Òthe sterile preoccupation with things that are artificial, the
alienation from the sources of our strength.Ó What are our sources of strength?
For Saint Andrew, the Vietnamese priest who was jailed and later killed for
being a Christian, Daniel waiting in the lionÕs den, and the Puritans, whose
offer of thanks we imitate today, the answer was God. Today, Thanksgiving,
is the right day to remember the source of our strength.
TodayÕs readings: Daniel 6:12-28;
Luke 21:20-28
(506)
ÒMay your
God, whom you serve so constantly, save you.Ó
Friday,
November 25
Feast of Catherine
of Alexandria, virgin, martyr
Lessons in wisdom
Saint
Catherine of Alexandria is traditionally believed to have
been martyred in the year 305 A.D. during a time of heavy Roman
persecution in the early church. Of noble origins and unsurpassed beauty and
brilliance, she is said to have announced to her parents that she would only
marry someone who surpassed her in loveliness, intelligence, wealth, and social
status—a foreshadowing of her eventual commitment to Christ. Executed by
the Roman emperor because of her extraordinary success in attracting converts
to Christianity, Catherine became patron saint of libraries and librarians as
well as all those associated with teaching. Thank someone in your life who brings wisdom and faith together.
TodayÕs readings: Daniel 7:2-14;
Luke 21:29-33
(507)
ÒHeaven and
earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.Ó
Saturday,
November 26
Feast of the
Blessed Virgin Mary
Living cheerfully—and vigilantly
ThereÕs lots
of bad news out there. You can hide from it only if you turn off the TV, stop
the newspaper, forsake the computer, and donÕt answer the phone or the door.
Unless you live alone, you might want to stay under the bed, too, because in a
world of trouble, relationships are the most troublesome of all. Young Mary got
the news from a stranger when her boy was only weeks old: Her son would face
conflict, and her own heart would be pierced with sorrow. Embracing that
revelation, she went home and lived her life, faithful as always.
TodayÕs readings: Daniel 7:15-27; Luke 21:34-36 (508)
ÒBe vigilant
at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations.Ó
THE ROMAN MISSAL 3RD EDITION
[November 20,
2011]
#7: Becoming what we receive
Ave Verum
Corpus natum ex Maria Virgine! Hail
to the True Body born of the Virgin Mary. As we celebrate the Solemnity of the
Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, we reflect on the very mystery that makes
us the Church: the Holy Eucharist. Saint Augustine of Hippo reminds us that
when we worthily eat the Body and Blood of Christ, we become what we have
received. All the activity of the Church, the Body of Christ, finds its origin
and its fullest expression in the celebration of the Eucharist.
In every stage
of our Christian life, we are invited to reflect more deeply on this
central Mystery of our Faith.
As we prepare to
receive the revised translation of the Roman Missal in Advent, our preparation
through prayer and study helps to deepen our appreciation of the Sacrament of
Sacraments. Yet, more than a change in the words, we are invited to change our
hearts and our lives. Our encounter with Christ in the Holy Eucharist brings us
to our knees in humble adoration of the gift of redemption and lifts us up, impelling
us to Ògo, glorifying the Lord by your life.Ó Our Holy Communion with Christ
transforms us to become His hands and feet bringing mercy and compassion to
each person we meet. As we adore the Body of Christ, we pray that we will be open
to the grace that changes us into the instruments of Christ who comes to heal the
brokenhearted.
