Thank you from
Catholic Social Services
Dear Father
Roncase,
On behalf of
the clients we serve, Catholic Social Services would like to thank you and your
parishioners for your very generous donations this past Christmas. Through your
generosity, our Agency was able to provide Christmas gifts for needy families
in Montgomery County. Your donations helped to brighten Christmas for needy
families who are experiencing financial hardship. The families who received
your gifts are very grateful. We especially wish to thank Sister Patricia
Kelly, M.S.B.T. for her part. We are grateful and inspired by your
parishionerÕs faith and selflessness shown by their continued acts of
generosity in sharing with the less fortunate. Catholic Social Services would
not be able to fulfill our mission without your support. May the blessings of
Christmas be with you and your parishioners throughout the year. God bless you.

February 1, 2012
Dear friends in
Christ,
The United States
Department of Health and Human Services announced on January 20 that almost all
employers, including Catholic employers, will be
forced to offer their employees health coverage that includes sterilization,
abortion-inducing drugs, and contraception. Almost all health insurers will be
forced to include those ÒservicesÓ in the health policies they write; and
almost all individuals will be forced to buy that coverage as a part of their
policies. In so ruling, the current Administration has undermined both the
principle of religious conscience and the First Amendment to the Constitution
in an unprecedented way. Unless the
ruling is overturned, faithful Catholics will be forced either to violate our
consciences, or to drop health coverage for our employees and suffer the
penalties for doing so. The AdministrationÕs only concession was to give our
institutions a one-year delay to comply.
This is not merely inadequate.
It is dangerous. And it
betrays the good faith of many Catholics who – until now – have
supported the current Administration with an honest will.
Bishops and lay
Catholic leaders across the United States have made it clear that we cannot
comply with this unjust law without compromising our convictions and
undermining the Catholic identity of many of our service ministries. This is
not just another important issue among the many we need to be concerned about.
This ruling is different. This
ruling interferes with the basic right of Catholic citizens to organize and
work for the common good as Catholics
in the public square.
Today, I ask of
you two things. First, we need to
pray for our country, for our Church, and for our own right to work freely as a
believing community through our ministries in the public square. Second, we need to act. Please visit the
Pennsylvania Catholic Conference website at: www.pacatholic.org to learn how to
contact your federal Representative and Senators. Write them, call them, visit
them - and help them understand the deep resistance of Pennsylvania Catholics
to this dangerous ruling. Please
also visit www.usccb.org/conscience,
to learn more about this attack on religious conscience, and how to work to reverse
the AdministrationÕs decision. Your
action on this issue matters –
not just today but for many years to come; and in ways
that will shape the ability of the Church to witness the Gospel publicly
through her ministries well into the future. Please know that you have my gratitude
and daily prayers. And please remember me in your prayers as well.
Sincerely
yours in Christ,
Most
Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap.
MEALS ON WHEELS DRIVERS/
DELIVERY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
As we reflect on
the recent MLK holiday, some of us may wonder how can I give back or serve my
community? One way would be to become a Meals On
Wheels volunteer here in the Upper Perkiomen Valley. We have an immediate
need for drivers / delivery volunteers to join our team. The position can
be performed once a week, every other week or even
once a month if that is all the time your schedule permits. Training is
provided and we have various days available for new volunteers. Please
call the center at 215-679-6550 and speak with Paula to set up a time to meet
and discuss this great opportunity. Keeping active is a great way to beat
the winter blues and volunteering is a great way to stay active.
PREVENTING WOMENÕS
HEART DISEASE
February is
American Heart Month and the UPSC is having a special educational program for
the community. The program is free, but registration is required.
You can register by calling the center at 215-679-6550.
On Tuesday February
21, 2012 at 12:15 p.m. we will be hosting a program entitled "Preventing
Woman's Heart Disease" and it will be presented by
Jeannine McKeogh from the CAROL for Heart organization. CAROL for HEART
is a nonprofit based in Horsham that provides free heart programs for
adults. CAROL for Heart began when Carol died. Thirty years of
undiagnosed heart disease caused 10 heart attacks she never knew she had.
How is that possible? How do you NOT know you are having a heart
attack? Too often symptoms of a heart attack are ignored or easily
confused with something else. In Carol's memory, CAROL for Heart was
started to provide education about how to prevent this disease. The
website for the organization is www.CarolForHeart.org
The presentation
will last about an hour and will include tips on symptoms, how to talk to your
doctor, risk factors, and how to make small changes that make a big impact on
your heart. Learn the signs and symptoms of a heart attack and how the
differ between men and women. Learn some easy exercises that everyone can
do, even from a chair. Learn easy substitutions you can make in your diet
that benefit your heart and won't make you feel like you are dieting. Our presenter, Jeannine McKeogh, is one of Carol's daughters and a
founder of CAROL for Heart. She brings a wealth of experience in the
sciences and gerontology and knows firsthand what heart disease can do to a
family. Carol's family founded the organization Carol for Heart to let everyone know how they can help to prevent this
disease. In addition, Terry Krause RN, BSN from Buxmont Cardiology will
also be at the center to participate in the program. She will be
providing free blood pressure checks and will have educational materials
available.
Invest just five minutes a day, and
your faith will deepen and grow—a day at a time.

Fifth Sunday of
Ordinary Time; World Day
for Consecrated Life
Dear sisters and brothers: Thank you!
Today we pray
for and give thanks to the men and women who publicly profess to live the vows
of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Monks, hermits, contemplatives, and
religious priests, sisters, and brothers represent the diversity of consecrated
life recognized by the church. Those who choose this life are committed to
imitating Christ, engaging in his ministries of spreading the Good News, and
showing that Òthe world can be transfigured with the spirit of the beatitudesÓ
(Catechism 932). Their witness reminds all of us that our lives have purpose

Feast of Paul
Miki, martyr, and companions, martyrs
Keep the story alive
Christianity
came to Japan with the arrival of Saint Francis Xavier in 1549. In fewer than
50 years, however, all foreign missionaries had been expelled and 26 Christians
were condemned to die, including Paul Miki, a Japanese-born Jesuit priest. The
story does not end there. In the 1860s new missionaries to Japan were
astonished to discover a hidden but thriving Christian community numbering in
the tens of thousands. They had managed to pass along the faith informally for
200 years! Such is the power of the Christian narrative. What is your favorite
story from the life of Jesus? Why? In what ways has it influenced your life?
How can you pass it along?
TodayÕs readings: 1 Kings 8:1-7, 9-13;
Mark 6:53-56 (329)
ÒAs they were
leaving the boat, people immediately recognized him.Ó

May God rest in peace!
Talk about
holy sites: the Temple Mount, where King Solomon is said to have built IsraelÕs
First Temple around 3,000 years ago, has been considered a sacred location by
at least four religious traditions: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and even
Roman paganism. Competing claims on the site, and on the area known as East
Jerusalem where it is located, are a central element of Arab-Israeli conflict
in the region. Surely we can find a way to bring lasting peace to the place
where tradition says the Divine Presence rested after creating the world and
then gathered the dust to form the first human beings. Add your voice to those
calling for a negotiated peace in GodÕs backyard.
TodayÕs readings: 1 Kings 8:22-23, 27-30; Mark 7:1-13 (330)
ÒMay your
eyes watch night and day over this temple.Ó

DonÕt be late to break-fast
With the
season of Lent and its practice of fasting arriving in a couple of weeks, itÕs
a little puzzling to remember that Jesus was a great breaker of fasts
and violator of religious food rules—that was one thing that got him into
trouble with the authorities. His followers gathered grain on the Sabbath
because they were starving. He ate with sinners and outcasts. He simply did
not follow the rules, but for a purpose: to show how the rules should not
control but rather serve to bring a person into a more loving relationship with
God and neighbor. What makes a person holy is not external observance but
internal faith and love, which leads to right behavior.
TodayÕs readings: 1 Kings 10:1-10;
Mark 7:14-23
(331)
ÒEverything
that goes into a person from outside cannot defile . . . .
But what comes out of the man, that is what defiles.Ó

What do you choose?
Being chosen
by God seems attractive, but GodÕs choice is less entitlement to special favors
and more being selected for a commission—given a job to do. Further, we
find that God does not usually choose as we might. We find God picking, for
example, David, the runt of the litter; Mary, an unknown girl from Nazareth;
the sinner over the holy man. Try to be aware of how you make choices: how you
will treat a troublesome fellow-worker or that driver who is tailgating or how
scrupulously honest you will be. Like God, who chose you to be one in Christ,
make decisions based not on the obvious but on what is inside the
other—and who dwells within you.
TodayÕs readings: 1 Kings 11:4-13;
Mark 7:24-30
(332)
ÒWhen Solomon
was old his wives had turned his heart to strange gods.Ó

Feast of
Scholastica, virgin
WhatÕs between your lifeÕs bookends?
We know few
facts about Saint Scholastica: She lived in Italy in the fifth and sixth
centuries, was the sister of Saint Benedict, became a nun and a prioress, and
helped found Benedictine monasticism. Yet, thanks to two brief comments by
Saint Gregory the Great, we know volumes about how she lived her life.
Of her childhood Gregory wrote: ÒShe was devoted to God from a very early age,Ó
and a few paragraphs later he added that when she died Òher soul ascended into
heaven in the likeness of a dove.Ó Though seemingly innocuous, these comments
are like bookends of ScholasticaÕs existence and give us a sense of the rich
content of her biography. As you think about your lifeÕs journey, what do your
bookends look like?
TodayÕs readings: 1 Kings 11:29-32; 12:19; Mark 7:31-37 (333)
ÒHe has done
all things well.Ó

Feast of Our
Lady of Lourdes; World Day of the Sick
God is bigger than our needs
In an hour of
crisis it may be impossible to imagine that help will arrive in time, or that
your great need might be met with sufficient comfort to make a difference. Yet
Jesus once faced a hungry multitude and fed them with next to nothing—and
no one went away in want. Today the church remembers those who are sick: all
who carry the cross of chronic problems like diabetes, AIDS, or mental illness
as well as those struck with a diagnosis of an illness like cancer, heart
disease, or stroke. We and our loved ones are not
forgotten. Jesus comes to fulfill every need. And his mother MaryÕs arms are
wide enough for all of us.
TodayÕs readings: 1 Kings 12:26-32, 13:33-34; Mark 8:1-10 (334)
ÒThey ate and
were satisfied.Ó
The theme
for Catholic Schools Week 2012 is
ÒCatholic
Schools: Faith. Academics. Service.Ó

The theme focuses on three priorities that Catholic schools
establish that make them stand out from other educational institutions.
Children are taught faith – not just the basics of Christianity, but how
to have a relationship with God. Academics, which in Catholic schools are held
to very high standards, help each child reach his or her potential. Service,
the giving of oneÕs time and effort to help others, is taught both as an
expression of faith and good citizenship.
Monday evening the St. Philip Neri branch of the Implementation
Committee had its first meeting. It was not until I began writing this letter
that I realized how the Standards for Quality Catholic Schools and this yearÕs
theme for Catholic Schools Week are synonymous. Faith—Catholic
Identity—a Catholic elementary school must promote the mission of the
Church as it is lived out. Academics—Academic Excellence—the
regional school must follow the educational policies and procedures and
curriculum guidelines established through the Office of Catholic Education. Service—the
regional school will participate in service projects in all 3 communities.
The local Implementation Committee
consists of Pastor, Principal and three parents/guardians. Mr. John Heibeck
(Thomas, grade 5 and Jack, kindergarten), Mrs. Amy Porter (Madison,
kindergarten) and Mr. Tom Schuler (Cameron, kindergarten) are our
representatives and I thank them for agreeing to participate in the process of
Catholic School Regionalization.
Prayer in time of Transition
Loving God, we ask for Your grace,
guidance, and strength.
May the inspiration of St. John Neumann
Inspire, trust, and calm as we labor to create a sustainable
future.
May the guidance of the Holy Spirit help us to make wise
choices.
May the compassion of the Good Shepherd
Draw us closer together in Your love.
Your church is universal in every place and every heart.
With one heart, one voice, and one faith, we make this prayer
that
unites us in respect for each other, through Christ our
Lord.
AMEN
I
am certain you have all heard of the closing of our St. Philip Neri School. We
are all filled with a complexity of emotions coupled with a multitude of fears
and concerns. Before I go any further, I want you to know that despite any
obstacle we will be facing, your children will remain our number one focus.
Their well being and education is our top priority.
